Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A wife's scrutiny over your next bike purchase is like a stupidity test for your decision. If you can't justify it to her you probably don't need it.

A guy I used to know always bought red bikes so that his wife wouldn't be able to tell when he got a new one. True story.

Or you could say it's a sponsorship deal. If you're a Masters rider with a paunch, it's plausible.

Tell her your frame had a crack and that the new bike is warranty replacement.
Or say you slipped on the floor of the bike shop, and the owner gave ya a bike to keep from calling a lawyer. (:

Just tell her "My bike is getting pretty long in the tooth but I am reluctant to replace it for sentimental reasons. My first wife bought it for me and that is all I have to remind me of her." You will either get a new bike or a letter from her lawyer.

If cyclists stopped making stupid purchase decisions, there would be little left of the industry. There is no logical way to explain why an amatuer cyclist needs a $3k-$10K bike, it just makes some people happy (me included). If your spouse is trying to justify non-essential spending with logic rather than the "happy-factor", it's going to be a long, hard road.

Another plan. For at least a couple of weekends ride to the golf course on your regular bike, carrying the bag and clubs. Just hang out in the clubhouse if you hate golf, but it would be better to play a round or two. Then casually mention that with the bikes you're looking at, you couldn't possibly carry clubs but that old bike is killing you. You're afraid your game will slip if you spent more time on a racy bike ... Ask her what she thinks. You don't want to give up golf but if it's impossible with a new bike, you do what you have to.

My advice:
Bikes are just like cars. "Oh look a RED car. Oh look a Blue car..." etc etc.

As long as both your bikes are the same colour and not stored in the same room you are safe.

I got into cycling about a year and a half ago when I bought my first bike, a hybrid. After riding the hell out it, I've decided to go for a road bike. The problem however, was that my girlfriend of 5 years, and with whom I live with, absolutely forbid me to buy another bike until she got a ring. I did and said everything I could think of to convince her I needed a new rig. She wasn't having it. I considered keeping it at a friends house, as well as a number of other clandestine operations. In the end, I gave in. On Tuesday I put down a deposit on a sexy machine. I'm now a single guy, living with two cats, and sometime next week, this:

I suspect that you made a really, really good decision that saved you a lot of future misery, and to boot, got a beautiful bike in the bargain.

We'll need to see pics of your ex-girlfriend as well so we can decide which was the better model. I personally can't see myself trading in a girlfriend for anything less than carbon with Ultegra but thats just me.

I see we have some preeeety good liars here helping this poor man with his bicycle dilemmas. and I see there's a few still trying to earn their eagle scout merit badge in marriage counselling, good luck with that. I liked the "rebuilding" the great find bike, lie the best. a good lie is a well baked one. to those that can't believe a lie would try to exist in our mist, you haven't followed politics for the last 6 million years have you? that's okay more time for riding if you don't. good luck OP on your quest, if this is as close to 'cheating' as you get, you have a pretty healthy marriage.

I would hate having to worry about my wife after I buy something. You just need to pull your weight buddy.

my wife and I made a budget for cycling. it's approaching $6k after 1 year... and she has nothing about which to complain... THAT is a win-win situation. Try that with your next wife.
