As long as this bike is from your 25% of the income who cares.
HTFU!!! Or...
Just buy her some bling to make it up to her.
1 for 1 is fair, is it not?
Ask her if she'd like to see more of you in all the wrong places?
ie: beer gut,fat ass,etc.

I announced the purchase of my latest bike the night that she announced what all she bought from a purse party. She didn't want to tell me any more details on the cost, and neither did I. Both ended up happy with what we got.

Bingo, that and asking vendor to provide no paper receipt or gift receipts only.
Also I tell my wife the bike was so cheap I couldn't pass up the deal. Then let her know what things I am going to sell to get money back.

WTF? It is the opposite of badass. Badass would be telling your wife you got a bike, deal with it. Tipping UPS drivers to hide packages in the bushes is what a scared little mouse does. There is nothing remotely badass about a scared little mouse cowering in the corner hoping he does not get caught.

Pretty good read and some really funny suggestions. Although I have to agree with those that say tell her the truth. My wife and I have been married 43 years and for most of the marriage we have had separate accounts. As long as the bills are paid, what we spend our money on is not a problem for the other. We tell each other what we are getting, but we don't have to justify it. Since we started the separate accounts, we have yet to have an argument over money or purchases we have made. May not be for everyone, but it sure worked for us.

I talk to my wife about all my purchases - she's my reality check, and its saved me on a couple of occasions. For example, I'm a roadie/cx'r and my buddy invited me out on an MTB ride on a borrowed bike. I loved it and when to the LBS the next day and put a deposit down on a 29r hard tail. My wife told me to wait a week before I picked it up.
Sure enough 1 week later, I didn't want it anymore. Turned the LBS deposit into a store credit and bought some stuff for road/cx instead.
I make 70% of the household income - but its exactly that - household income. We have kids to raise, bills to pay, future savings to plan for.
You can't hide it forever, and while people casually say forgiveness is easier than permission - I can guarantee you that resentment is harder to deal with than anything else.

I don't think who has what income matters, especially when there's a house and kids.
Me ... I make 100% of household income ... but that certainly doesn't mean I get to buy whatever I like and I let my kids starve, right?
Having a wife to justify your spending to helps to keep yourself from spending too much too easily.

You're already sort of lying, so just go full tilt. "Honey, look at this bike I won at a raffle at that out of state ride X number of months ago." Your relationship is already base on subterfuge, so out with it and you're done.

Soften the blow. I bought a used bike recently, and explained I got it for half of original retail, (great value). Even though I found it on CL, I told her it ended up being the neighbor of a friend of mine. (true story) and he let me put $200 down on it while I rode it for a couple week to see if I like it. ($200 down overnight) Now my saving grace is wife works with a couple guys who ride and she told them about the "deal" I got and they were all' "awesome", great deal etc. Got my bike sold, sold some office furniture I had in a storeage facility, and boom, out of pocket, $400 for great new bike. Softened the blow. Never lied about the actual price I paid. She loves my new physique too and that helps!

Tough to tell sometimes but when in doubt, I imagine the comments coming from one of the guys and consider it a friendly slam. One thing I think about is that we are all on this forum as lovers of bikes and biking. Mix any of us in a room and we would find that common enough ground to get along with or without the insults and have a good time. If you are reading my posts, always assume I am writing them with a smirk or a smile and you won't be far from the truth.

Just make sure you thank her for the new bike when you surprise her with it.
That should smooth any misunderstandings over.
