Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Loose metal inside wheel rim! Defect?

I have a set of Mavic Ksyrum Equipe wheels that came on my Moto. They have been working great for the past 11 months, but I have been noticing this intermittent rattling. Long story short there is a piece of metal inside the rim, in the section where it was welded together. It will only slide as far as the nipple for the spokes on either side of it,but if I peal back the rim tape I can see the edge of it in the hole for the spoke nipple when its slid over that way.

Is this a manufacture defect? Is this normal? Why is there a piece of metal built behind the weld inside the rim that can move around?

What should I do about it?

Had the same situation with RS-10s. My glorious LBS fished out the metal pieces during a annual tune-up. They didn't seem too concerned and said it happens from time to time. Pretty damn annoying though.

I don't think this piece could be fished out without hacksawing open the rim. It looks like perhaps it was used to align the rim when it was welded? Looks like a rectangular piece of metal that fits right inside the rim. I don't know how long it is but its the full width of the inside of the rim. Might go ask the LBS next time I am up there.

I was thinking about this piece of metal a bit more... I was assuming that it was there to align the rim for welding but being that its directly opposite the valve stem could it be in there as a counter weight to help balance the wheel?

No. No manufacturer would leave a loose piece of metal in a rim to act as a counterbalance for the valve stem. Try to take a picture of it and show us and the manufacturer, ask them what to do about it. They might send you another wheel and have you send back that one.

Hmm, interesting. I have the exact same wheels, less than 6 months old, barely ridden (I got a new bike, switched these out to my secondary bike and put Easton EA90's on the new bike) and the rear wheel just begun rattling. I was planning to take the rear wheel to the bike shop for this very issue.

Just squirt some epoxy into the rim and move the rim until the slag gets stuck in it. Let it dry and then forget about it.
