Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. 2000 Specialized Allez

Have been looking at this 2000 Specialized Allez, asking price $400, simply with the idea to trade componentry with my current '12 Allez. The one pictured has 105 components as well as a carbon stem and handlebars, oh, and also newer vuelta corsa HD wheelset. Would swapping out the drivetrain be possible? I have never done anything like this but am interested in learning how to. I've been wanting at least 105 but do really like my current frame, which has 2300. I would probably give the 2000 allez to a friend of mine eager to get into the sport.

Advice?

Also, is $400 a reasonable asking price?
The seller is calling this a 2000 specialized allez. based on the 105's, bikepedia calls this either an A1 sport or A1 sport triple, but the frame in the photos does not match. Anyone know more about these?

How old are the 105's? IOW, there's been several iterations.

FWIW, I sold my 07 Allez last year for $450, albeit to a friend.

I've just asked the guy, would age matter much as long as they are low mileage, or do each iteration have different quality?

Bikes: New- '14 Specialized Roubaix Sport, Old-'00 Specialized Allez Sport, Totaled-'12 Cannondale SuperSix 3, Cannondale mountainbike, old but cool.

I have a 2001 Allez Sport that I recently upgraded out of due to the front shifter would not want to switch gears sometimes. It probably just needs adjusting, but I would wonder how many miles are on that bike. $400 seems pricey to me for a bike that old. It appears to have upgraded wheels, mine has Ritchey wheels.
I have to say I love the 105 components, much better than what was on my previous bike. I have really enjoyed the Allez, been a very reliable bike. I almost have 5k miles on it and plan to ride it until it reachs that milestone. (of course on this board, that is amateur level!) My 105 components have the blue lettering with the yellow inside it, if that matters.

Good luck!

That would sell for $400 is the summer here pretty quickly - not so much this time of year. Maybe you can offer $350?

The wheels are a nice upgrade and the 105 stuff would like transfer pretty easily. 5510 is better than 5500 (yellow/blue lettering), but it all works.

If you want a 2nd bike for rain rides, maybe it's an idea, but honestly you should be looking for a newer bike if you want to do a group swap because 12 year old 105 may shift better than 2300 if properly tuned, but chances are you'll have to start replacing components soon and that adds up. Also, those wheels are Nashbar-bought and designed for heavy riders (250+ lbs), they are very sturdy but also very heavy and relatively cheap (~$150 new) so they aren't really an upgrade unless you currently have seized bearings and can't fix them.

Yikes, my fault on the wheels. I thought they were the 1600g 'Lite' version not the ones just under 2500g(!):

I've got a pair of the Corsa Lites, they are mind blowingly good for the price I paid ($280) for a 1560g wheelset that has had 0 issues with staying true or broken spokes like I had constantly with my last set of wheels. Love them, and I'm sure if you don't mind the extra 2+ lbs, the Corsa HDs are surely bombproof as well.

Would you trade out parts in your 2012 corolla for parts in a 2000 camry? probably not...don't do it

Not a good deal, because the 12 Sora has essentially become what the Tiagra was, while Tiagra is now 10 speeds (the same as the 105). Trickle down technology has done very well for the Shimano range, buying this bike for the componentry isn't worth it.

You could pick up the 105 bits off of eBay or at a swap meet, that are newer versions for that price or less. I did this last year for a 97 R500 Cdale to convert from the RSX it had, save the wheelset which you figured out were not the top end models. A lighter wheelset could be found, too, for less dollars and you could just convert your bike and sell off the 2300. I like the idea of leaving it alone, riding it to train and for errands then buying a new 105 or Rival equipped bike. Your choice, best of luck.

All good advice. Not super concerned about the wheelset being HD as i'm a heavier rider @ ~215. What about the (Zeus III) CF stem and handlebars? I agree that it may not be wise to swap out componetry.

What about a 2010 Sora Groupo? That's a step in between 2300 and 105's right?

'10 Sora's are likely on par with '00 105's...but still not likely to be worth the exchange onto your bike. Look for Tiagra's to avoid the thumb shifter.

The 2013 Sora line is the first to ditch the thumb trigger shifter that it traditionally had, bringing the shifting mechanics in line with the higher end groups which use the 2nd paddle. It also goes from 8 to 9 speed, but still isn't compatible with the 10 speed Tiagra, 105, and Ultegra bits. I had a bike with the old style Sora, and it was functional but I hated the shifters. I'd avoid anything with pre-'13 Sora, and I'm sure you can find a $400 bike in your area that's less than 6 or 7 years old with Tiagra or 105.

This price isn't too good...but gives you an idea on a 'replacement' group:

Picked it up for $350, in the process of swapping out the CF headset/handlebar and Wheelset with my '11 Allez. Following advice not to swap out '00 105's (5500).

after swap..

more research reveals the blue Allez is more likely a '99 model than '00
