So yesterday I discovered the key to surviving being attacked by a pack of dogs. Near the middle of my 3/4 metric century ride, my cycling companion and I where toiling up this hill when a pack of wild dogs came charging after us from the field on the right below (actually it was only two dogs, one of which was quite small, but they were barking ferociously).

At that moment it occurred to me that I did not have to out-pedal the dogs, I only had to out-pedal my companion (who had not been riding in a few months). So I dialed it up to 400 watts and dropped him.

That's the key to survival: riding with someone slower than you.

Smart move. Did he survive?

Yes, they grew weary of the chase, or their dog collars went off, or something.

Even Lance couldn't outrun a horse.

SA's neighborhood horseys are prolly Cat6 bridal trail chumps tho

I only remember one person posting pics of his/her legs. You! And it was not a pretty site. Although as I've said before, if I post pics of myself, I'll break the internet

Since in your case that's not possible, what is your strategy?

Do me a favor. If you don't like my Glock reference because you think it's too inflammatory, delete the friggin post. Any mod who does what this one did should be banned.

Nice kitten picture though.

I went to see my first Civil War battle reenactment yesterday. I was a bit surprised at first... the South won.

Then I remembered on which side of the Mason-Dixon line I live.

Funny.

I take it you weren't born the other side of the M-D line.

Horses can jump. A stallion can be a dangerous animal if spooked or if it doesn't like you. They can kick and their aim if pretty good, even on the run. They like head shots. Several people that I know of, have either been killed or ended up with permanent brain damage -- the latter after stopping on the roadside to help the horse after its feet got caught in a fence.

Decades ago I was 2manymotorcycles. I loaned a friend my bright red Rickman dirt bike, and I rode a quieter. sort of neutral color bike. We have dirt roads here that go under the power cables for the maintenance trucks. They are like a dirt bike highway system. In many places the cables and the path/road would go through farm fields. We came to a place where there was a double S curve, with huge bolders blocking your view of the road ahead. I was leading the way. As I passed through the last curve and could see the field, the road went right between two HUGE bulls. They had rings in their noses and a short chain to a spike in the ground.
I had to go right between them so I went fast. After passing them I looked back and one of the bulls was right in the middle of the road. At that instant he was all four feet in the air and swinging the stake pulled from the ground around like a mace. A fraction of a second before my friend rounded the last boulder. It was a relatively easy to ride, smooth, road, we were going maybe 40 mph. I could only glance back for a second, I had to watch where I was going.

All of a sudden the sound of a super race tuned 125cc Zundapp 2 stroke (the engine on the Rickman) going 12,000 rpm at full throttle blocked out everything. If I was going 40 mph, my friend passed me at least at 60 mph, on a dirt road. He hit some bumps, went five feet in the air under complete control, and kept on going, like it was a highway. I have never been able to duplicate that speed on dirt roads with far more sophisticated bikes, ever.
Neither has my friend.
Until that instant it always seemed like I was a lot better rider. Apparently it was only a question of motivation.
That was in the late 1970's. I can picture that bull right now as if it just happened.

The Confederates won a couple of battles that took place in Florida - Natural Bridge and Olustee.

Apparently they "won" the "Brooksville Raid" as well.

I'm originally from Ohio... a bit north of the line.

I was riding my Spinergy carbon clinchers. They aren't loud compared to my Zipp tubies. I was riding this bike exactly as shown, except with water bottles in the cages.

I'm not sure what spooked that horse. I am just glad that fence held up as good as it did. I ride down that road often. There are some good hills leading up to the point where the horse encounter was. The horse encounter was about 16.5miles into this ride. http://app.strava.com/activities/38143774
