Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Awe (retainer) nuts...

Hello,

Calling all guys running tubes on your road bike. I was curious do you run retainer nuts on your tubes?

RH

Wut?

You mean around the valve stem on an inner tube? No. They're completely unnecessary.

On wheels where the valve stem rattles in the hole, yes.

Valve cap, no. Those caps are only there on Presta valves to keep the valve itself from puncturing the tube while it's rolled up in the box. Not needed after installing, unlike Schraeder valves where you need the cap to keep out dirt and water.

Retainer nuts, yes. Absolutely, on both of my bikes. I can't stand non-threaded tubes now. Having the nut on there makes it so much easier when airing up the tires, especially on larger MTB tires that run lower pressure, where it's much easier to push the valve stem back into the tire/rim.

I have not run retainer nuts in years. You do not need them.

Again, the use of the retainer nut violates the terms and conditions of the 41.

Yes, I use both the nuts and the valve covers. I use an air compressor to fill my tires so having the nut on the valve stem keeps it in place when I push on it to fill the tire and the valve cover keeps everything clean.

I like how the nut stabilizes the valve tube when I am pushing 900 watts into my mini pump.

I save the caps for when I roll tubes up in my saddle bag.

I had fewer tubes ruined by the valve stem pulling out after I stopped using the nuts. Extra points for taking the nut off a new tube before packing it in your bag. I also save the caps for packing when removing a flatted tube. No sense making another hole.

I don't use the nuts. I use valve caps on MTB wheels to keep dirt out of the valves.

Hmmm, whatever did you have in mind?

BTW, no nuts or caps here. I like Michelin tubes with no threads.

Bikes: Bike Count: Rising.

Only when filling them. Once filled, they come off.

It's not "condition 41"

It's "the 41"

You are on the 41. Tread carefully.

It's bad.
You lose the hair on your legs, your perception of speed goes up, and you get an urge to buy expensive crap.
