Much as I admire Apple, I just don't see them continuing to innovate as radically as they did with Jobs. Without a new product, they are stuck in a maturing market which is already starting to chase the low end and a big challenger in the form of Samsung is already making in-roads into the high end.

They will introduce a new Latin flavored tech product.

They will call it the iCarrammba.

I actually couldn't tell until I got my speakers properly placed and spiked the other day. Nice performance otherwise. It won't be the only piece of which I have multiple performances...

Or at least that's the rumor.

That rumour seems to have died down since last year. Even if it is the next project, I can't see how a TV product can be revolutionary...not enough to make everyone replace their existing TVs. That big shift only happened very recently from CR to flat screens and even then the TV makers did not make money.

Apple hasn't always been about radical innovations. Some things sneak in barely noticed. When was the last time you used a floppy disk? Before the iMac, EVERY machine had one.

I'll be surprised if they go into the TV space, that's a loser.

+1

Also, I just don't think there's really that much opportunity for planned obsolescence like a lot of other gadgets. We bought our main TV 6 years ago. It's just a TV. Nothing crazy, and no plans to replace it any time soon. We have friends who just bought a "smart" tv and I really wasn't impressed with it. The "soap opera effect" of interpolation is really visually unappealing, I think 3D is dumb, and the gesture controls suck. The other stuff it does, we do through an apple tv box (Netflix, Hulu+, etc.) Meh.

The kid's gaming pc is dying, and I have been tasked with replacing it. Anyone have thoughts on the latest round of AMD processors and sockets? My last builds were AthlonII dual cores on AM2 sockets. Now I can choose between FM2, FM1, and AM3+ sockets. Anyone have any experience? I'd like to spend $400-500ish on motherboard, processor, ram, HD, and graphics card (which may be unneeded on FM2, if I understand correctly).

They didn't? Someone had to be.

FM1/2 can give you some modest gaming performance on monitors under 1920*1080/1200. Tend to be very efficient, too - I built up a triple core FM1 for my wife's computer, which we also use as an HTPC (music/bluray streaming). AM3 sockets will be nothing new to you. If I remember correctly, Tom's Hardware just updated their budget builds, including a $500 gaming machine (not incl peripherals, OS).

Looks like they went Intel with the budget build this time around, but discuss the AMD alternatives.

Last thing, I promise - MicroCenter has some pretty aggressive bundles on FX processors/motherboards.

I am a contrarian.

Actually, most bike talk is boring, except for that of my cycling exploits.

Excellent. I'll keep it short, so as not to bore you. I think a Quark is in my future.

Why don't you ever post what happens during your epic rides? Certainly you've got to see something interesting during the eight hours you are on the roads.

RollCNY 02-07-13 02:52 PM

WhyFi, is the speed of DDR3 ram significant? It seems the FM2's will handle 1866, where many of the AM3+ are 1333. With DDR2, speed and latency were the kings. Is that still the same, or less significant?

WhyFi 02-07-13 03:15 PM

Speed has a more significant impact on performance with FM1/FM2 than with the others (where the difference beyond CL9/1600 is either minor or non-existent).

WhyFi 02-07-13 03:21 PM

That reminds me - I was looking through my newegg purchase history a couple days ago (looking for justification for the imminent board/cpu upgrade and found it - I've had my current board for 5 years), and saw that I had purchased 2*1GB DDR for the princely sum of $200 in 2006. That's changed a little.

RollCNY 02-07-13 03:27 PM

About 2 months back I found the folder I kept on my first pc when I got out of college:486SX/33. When I upgraded ram, it was $40 per MB. I kept all the receipts. What a hoot.

I have moving pictures. Around 4:30 is when it's good, otherwise it's just a 10 minute descent. Other than the fact I had to climb that thing, which is an exploit, and I generally keep them to myself. Not necessarily boring to me, but likely boring to others.

BillyD 02-07-13 03:45 PM

My first Mac was a IIci, second fastest machine they offered at the time. I think it was 1991 or '92 at the time - cost $3,500. :crash:

I can get two 27" iMacs today for that amount.

Ram was so expensive back then, I remember struggling along for a couple of years with only 5MB of memory. Then they had a fire somewhere in Indonesia in one of only two existing RAM factories in the frikkin' world. Therefore, even if you were rich and could buy as much as you wanted, you couldn't find any to buy.

Good times.

I prefer Oliver Nelson's version.

I bought it along with one or two other items and a 19" color monitor. $7K. The machines have gotten cheaper, better, faster. Newest iMac on my desk arrived in late December, 27" screen, fusion drive, probably not an exaggeration to say it's 500+x faster than the original Iici, $2200 or so with an extended 3 year Applecare warranty/support contract.

BillyD 02-07-13 05:38 PM

I ordered a 21" fusion drive model last week. I can't wait til it arrives. Can't wait to see how fast processing photos will go.

Drooling!

Cycling content alert! With live animals. This is one of the better posts here in a while. Man, you've got a lot of cyclists there.

I wish I could video some of my rides. They'd be YouTube favourites, for sure
