Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Michelin pro 3 vs pro 4?

Hey guys, what's the difference between these tires? I currently ride pro4s, and they're great and light. A little noisy though.

Noisy? Compared to what? Sure it's your tires?

Well, I only have it on the front.

It's not unbearable or anything, I just hear a subtle "fffffff" sound when I pick up speed. Maybe 20+ mph.

The 3 is the old version, 4 is new.

Although the 3 was the 'race' slick, and when they went to the 4 they grouped other tires in on it. The 'service course' is the race, the 'endurance' is the old Krylion Carbon. I think there is a light weight edition too.

This seems totally weird to me. Hearing the tire on the road in the first place, and you can hear it over the wind noise in your ears at 20 mph?

Thanks for the info, mate!

Good point. I only hear it I guess when I turn my head?

Maybe I am missing something but there is nothing new in that article. Michelin announced and launched all models of the 4 last year.

Oh and OP - the 2 rocked. The 3 was way too soft and while it was awesome in performance it cut and flatted way too easy. After flatting out of a few races I switched complete off of michelins for clinchers. (To continental). With the pro 4 I went back. Same awesome performance (even better) with much better wear and flat performance. Like the old 2 but better.

I only got about 2000kms from my Pro 4 rear tire. Not a lot when compared to Conti GP 4000s.

I agree. I got a lot of flats on Pro3's and did very well with my current set of Pro4's. 3,000 miles, maybe 2 flats. I have another pair on its way from PBK to me but am now slightly upset because I just read about the mentioned new line. The Pro4 Comp 150tpi sound really nice. I guess I can wear my new Pro4's down and then get those.

Agree 100%. I also had a new PRO3 let me down in a road race... I also swore off of them until the PRO4 promised better flat protection. for some reason I like how Michelin tires roll and handle comapred to Continentals... I have used the PRO4 Service Courses in TT's and really like them.

I've heard plenty of people saying the GP4000S feels "dead" and the Pro3 was much more "lively". Is that still true of the Pro4 line, and is the flat resistance at all comparable now? The GP4k flats almost never in my experience (knock on wood) while feeling MUCH better than the Gatorskin. Still, I'm violently allergic to flats, so I'm disinclined to try the Pro4 unless they're very durable as well now.

Lifespan is less of an issue for me, mind you, I just don't want flats while the tire is in use.

Did the same but stuck on 4's. Get about 8000 miles on it before I replaced with the same (service course). They grip like gum to the rode through the worst downpours in Florida.

Yes. In my experience the GP 4000S, while a nice tire with great longevity and flat protection, gives what I too would refer to as a dead ride. I rode the pro4's all last year. Super performance and no flats during the year.

I prefer the 2 as well. In the past 3 rides I have purchased 2 replacement Pro4's in 23c due to deep cuts. I just put a set of 25c Pro4's on so maybe they will do better if not I think I will be going back to GP4000's.

I'm another Michelin lover. Very lively, to the point where it is quite noticeable after switching from other brands. My current tire is the Krylion which has been discontinued if not mistaken. Light, responsive and not many flats. My next tire is likely the PR4.

Fantastic to hear. Which Pro4? It's annoying that they made so many variants.

Honestly I have been using mostly the 25's

thanx for the info! I'm glad they didnt toss the formula on the Krylion. Back a few years ago someone posted a comprehensive study on rolling resistance where the Krylion fared near the top. That was the deciding factor for me.

I had cuts with the 4's also but what has worked for me to avoid the cuts was 116 tire pressure. I believe this is their thinking behind the thicker middle section.
