Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

need help identifying a Litespeed

Not that it is terribly relevant to whether I will keep and ride this frameset; I certainly will; but can anyone identify this Litespeed? So far, I am under the assumption that it is a circa 2003 Classic.

For what it is worth, a 27.2 seatpost slid in smoothly. I have not measured yet, but I assume that a 22.2 stem will fit as well.

I smell classic too.

Here's a great resource for looking up litespeed:

https://mombat.org/MOMBAT/BikeHistory...Litespeed.html
It has complete catalogs for Lynskey period although it might be a slower loading site on my end.

Concise change logs for models by the year can be found on tirides.

Not so sure about it being 2003, should be a 90's model considering it has a 1" threaded headset/ tube. By 03', they were using 1 1/8" threadless.

I agree that this is most likely an early 90's model. The early years of Litespeed saw polished finishes and things like welded on seat tube clamps, as well as a pump peg. The dropouts are most definitely their 6/4, cut with a water-jet. I'm recalling many of these little details from my time as a framebuilder and seeing some of Litespeed's very early frames.

While there is obviously a production headbadge, and a Lynskey decal on the chainstay, it is interesting there is no downtube decal.

I'm disappointed that I couldn't find this in my search. Thanks!

It has a tiny CycleArt decal on the chainstay, so I do not believe the paint is original. I could be wrong though, since I do not know if Litespeed sent out frames for paint. I'm obviously new to the brand.

Thanks guys!

I know that for a bit, not sure how long however, one could order a custom Litespeed. So it is possible that the paint is original and was part of the customers order. Based on the measurements in the ebay ad, I would suspect it may be a custom build.

Bikes: Litespeed, O'Brien, Specialized, Fuji

I have a 96 or 97 Classic, and while most of the OP's frame is about right, there are some significant differences I see. First, the shift bosses are STI specific in that they are placed very near the head tube, and mine are in the traditional location suitable for downtube shifters. Second, the top of my seat tube is square cut, and the OP frame has a pointy top seat tube.

IMO, Gordon Youde simply got Cycle Art to paint up a frame and didn't want decals, which are usually available from Litespeed. Maybe later model years had the pointy seat tube and STI bosses, but I haven't looked through all the changes through the years.

Edit: looking through the later catalogs points to 1999 as having all of the features.

No help with IDing the Lightspeed but it is beautiful form what I can see. How do you plan to build it up? Should be a really good ride.

It is pretty nice, but I wasn't planning on the purchase.

I plan to install a 9-speed, mostly Athena group. It will likely share a Ksyrium Elite wheelset with another bike. I'm pretty sure that I have all of the other components in my parts bin, so I should only need to buy the consumables: chain, cables/housing, brake pads, bar tape, etc.

I think that you mean to say a late 90s model

No, I did mean earlier 90's which is when I recall seeing most of the attributes on the OP's frame. This does not at all mean that I am absolutely correct mind you....but I really did mean what I wrote. Thanks though!

My 2002 Litespeed has a 1.25" threadless headset, so I doubt that frame is newer than that.
