Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They are 1670g. 24f radial, 24r 2x, Sapim Laser spokes (basically round CX-Rays).

Considering the weight of the PT hub, it'd be quite easy to do this build and end up with something at 1500g or less. Honestly, when I bought this wheelset, I was after the fact that it had a Powertap hub. I didn't know anything about the C2 rim, so that has been a super nice surprise.

I don't have a cross-section yet, but it sounds like they'll be nearly as aero as the Zipp 101s (angled brake track, even wider than the current Belgium) for a lot cheaper. Don't get me wrong, I love my current Belgiums, but I'm waiting for the + for my next wheelset. Every builder I've spoken to has nothing but huge praise for the consistency and quality of the current ones, so I'll accept the higher price.

Fair enough about the DT Swiss vs WI - I haven't played with either.

I just got back from a ride and figured I would take a few pictures of my build for you. HED just recently changed the graphics on the rims and these are the newest version...

Well I'm a bit late to this thread I guess, but it was a very nice read for sure. You're very lucky to have had the chance to conduct such testing. I read the whole thread and may have missed it, but why did she offer you to test all those demo wheels? Does she do that regularly for customers?

NOTHING, NOT .01 comes out of our paychecks/budget. Its because our means of income go toward more important things for our family...house, car...the nccassary items. Its the sacrifice we made and understood when we had our 2 kids and bought our 2nd house (sold the first and bought current, not own 2 homes at once). I have been able to sell a lot of bike stuff I had laying around over the past 3 months which helped a lot getting my bike the way it is now. I currently have $650 saved up and I am essentially out of things to sell off. Its going to take some time I think to build up enough of a budget just to purchase a wheelset from jude. Its difficult for me to have cash and not spend it, so saving up isn't easy. I was initially saving up for an evo frameset, but after my spoke broke, wheels became an important forethought.
Dude, sounds a lot like me with my wife and our 3-year old son. Just can't get out as much as I'd like. Buying my first road bike back in September was a stretch for us, but I'm sure glad I made it work. Unfortunately for me I usually end up putting most of my Christmas/birthday money towards house, bills, car repairs, etc. I'm hoping I can upgrade my stock Mavic CXP22's some day, probably not with full custom builds, but something lighter. Both of my rims with 105 10-sp cassette and rim tape come in at 2,343g (front wheel by itself is 915g). I need to yank that cassette off of there and see how much it weighs by itself.

*edit* oh yeah, waiting to hear thoughts on the current carbon wheelset.

Those look great. I want to see what bianchi says about the enve set, as for the hubs... Pink of course.

Crap. Just saw this thread and figured it was old enough to see how the Enves were faring. I guess I could have read the post dates.
You've definitely got some lurkers interested in the results!

And we're still talking $1,049 for, frankly, not the best or second best aluminum rims/ wheels.

I was looking for that perfect wheel. It took this amazing experience for me to realize that you cant have it all in one wheel.

I wnted an aero advantage. Your options are very very minimal and very expensive to find an UBER light deep wheel without compromising stiffness and durability. So after realizing this I thought about which wheel set can I get that is uber light and stiff. There were several options. At none of them had the aero that I was looking for. There are brands out there that claim to be deep, durable and uber light. Couple Chinese carbon wheel manufacturers advertise this and there are tons of happy customers but there are also tons of reviews about unsatisfied customers. I'm not willing to take a risk and blow money on a set that I don't trust.

So what would your wheel suggestion be for a better wheel choice with a comparable price tag?

I'm surprised she even told you the specifics. I would have taken off all the identifying stickers. I love this concept and would love to hear more!

Well there's no rider weight limit. Rolf users are always gushing about how durable the things are, and OP could drive about a 100 miles and check the HQ out in person where they hand-build everything.

Listed at 1449 grams and $1100. Would rather just get a custom set with Belgium rims on whatever hubs you prefer, but the Ardennes SL are just about the same weight, same price, wider, more known, and more durable without that paired-spoke nonsense. Why WOULD you take the Rolfs?

How did Rolf's come into this equation? I never mentioned anything about purchasing Rolf's. I'm looking into a custom set of HED C2's. Am I misunderstanding something here?

Yes, you're missing the context - James brought up the Rolf's, Gary and Bah were discussing their merits (or lack there-of), so when you asked Bah what he would recommend instead, he assumed you were talking about the Rolf's as well.

Sorry for the confusion. Post #265 had a link to Rolf Prima's site.

Yeah, sorry for the confusion. I still agree with Belgium, CX-Ray, and whatever hubs you prefer. Belgium+ if you can wait. I actually just emailed HED asking for the cross-section and availability date; I'll post when/ if they get back to me.

I think you should get the limited Purple CK hubs.

BTW have you decided on 10 speed only or are you considering a slight future/campy proof wheel by going 11 speed ready?

I'm doing 10 speed for now. I haven't looked into 11 speed nor do I know anything it. But I'd be open minded. Have to get a new cassette but anything else?

You would need new hubs if the current ones don't support a new freehub that is 11 speed. For example the WI T11 is 11 speed but uses a small ring to run an 10 speed cassette. The new CK hubs have a 11 speed option. Dimensions of the hub is different.

You wheel may need to be re-dished if you convert to 11 speed later.

Bikes: are fun! :-)

No doubt the HED rims are very nice. Has anyone out there tried the new Pacenti SW23 rims? They sound like another interesting option.

Nice thread. Sugar is on my list for my next set of wheels. I've heard nothing but good about them. I'm waiting for my powertap wheel to fail (again) and that is where I will be going.

We should meet and ride sometime... Canby loop?.. I'm just over the river.
