It was a bigger lurch this morning than I had expereienced before but I really didn't think it was such a big deal until I saw the news reports. I hope Bob Dop is ok. He is nearer the area that got shook up most. I see on news that some of the high-tech factories got disrupted. Maybe some of you iPhone koolaid kids will have to wait for your Apple elixir. |

If you're going to be a prepper, do it in style.

So, we swapped out our old oil burning furnace for a 2-stage high efficiency gas furnace in November.
Based on what we've paid over the winter, I'm estimating we're saving something like $1,200 for fuel, which will pay off the furnace in 2.5 years. That's even with bumping up the thermostat a few degrees. Why the **** didn't we do this 5 years ago?! |
Another chilly night here... this winter is really hanging on. I got to sleep with the AC off and the windows open again.
It's a rough life. |

I have old outdated shingles on my roof (T-lok) and looking to replace them with the Dow Solar shingles. Green is good because it keeps green in my wallet. |

Nice savings though. I have old outdated shingles on my roof (T-lok) and looking to replace them with the Dow Solar shingles. Green is good because it keeps green in my wallet. Our roof has been in dire need of replacement since before we bought it, did a hack patch and repair of the dormer with a chimney that was causing some leakage, but we haven't replaced the rest yet. We're doing that in spring. I'd love to do solar anything, but we're in constant limbo of possibly moving and that's not worth the investment unless we decide we're absolutely staying here. That's part of why we keep putting stuff off but we figured the roof and furnace (and probably a repaint) will help us sell it easier, even if we don't get our money back out of it. |
We went from an 15 year old contractor grade (i.e. cheap) oil boiler (oil heat up here) to an Energy Kinetics System 2000 system (most efficient oil fired boiler on the planet) and an Armstrong central a/c/heat pump unit (electric). We cut our oil consumption here from 1500 gallons+ annually to 600-750 gallons, and our electric bill only went up a few hundred dollars per year. All that cost about $18K, but it will probably pay for itself in 6-7 years, I'm sure it's halfway there already.

I have a $50 heated mattress pad that I use a couple times per year. I figure it'll last forever and cost a couple bucks in electricity.
Ok... that's my last smartass comment about the weather here. OOH looky... I'm 21 posts away from my first 1,000! |
Laughing out loud over here... literally... not that LOL crap.
I want to practice "bouncing off" my wife's back wheel. 6 weeks later... My wife had a bad crash and never wants to ride again. Coincidence??? |
