Still. You really put bells on your bikes?

Yes. A tiny black one that weighs 28g, it really slows us down on the hills. We've got no choice on the tandem. My daughter has a pink one on her bike.

But it's a BELL! People point and laugh at you! Your daughter will be emotionally scarred for life! Running the gauntlet of the pigs must be worth more than that.

Hands up who else has a bell? I've been riding 22 years without a bell, and haven't been done yet. What's the betting I get done this arvo for opening my fat trap? :(

First thing that came off the Malvern Star Olympic 12, Xmas Day 1988......followed by the dorky spoke protector, and every reflector.

I have never had a bell. Not even on my trikes and scooters as a kid.

I did put an air horn on the Mirage one year. Works a treat when boofhead car drivers try to pull out in front of you. By the time they work out WTF happened thier in your dust. :)

ed073 12-22-04 09:40 PM

didn't see bells on any of the pros bikes on their ride from Sydney to Wollongong on Sunday's Cycling Central.....weird.

I think it's more about the guys that ride on bike paths like along Newcastle Foreshore. Consider it from our point of view - narrow path full of pedestrians, we're two people on a bike that weighs close to 20kg. That said, the police chopper is already on alert and looking for you.

Isn't riding on footpaths illegal?

Nothing new. :(

Paid the $16 to get sent my driving record the other day. Added up all my "indisgressions" and it came out to $3704. :(

Hand up for about half my bikes. I have to get a few more fitted up. I have the ones Expat is talking about. I don't *use* them, and they are discreetly hidden on the bike. My voice is far more effective. But on my randonnee bike, it has to be there.

It's a legal requirement. You get stopped. You don't have one. You get booked. You cop it. Simple as that.
Mind you, you'd have to be doing something pretty p!ssy to be stopped in the first place -- like running a red light or stop sign, or having no lights at night. In all those cases, you'd be deserving what ya got.

As to lights... well the roadies around here seem to regard them with the same disdain as bells. I'm non-negotiable on lights. You don't have 'em, I hope you get booked. And you don't ride with me.

We can ride on the footpaths with our daughter, as she's 12 or under. I suppose they're "multi-user" paths that we ride on. So you could have bought another bike for what you're paying in fines?

If I didn't know better, I'd say the Taswegian is taking sides with the seppo! As far as lights, I can order some pretty sweet ones, but the minimum order is US$600. The law states it only has to make you visible from a certain distance, so even a 3 LED will do the job. If anyone's interested in a light, please let me know. The product line can be found at THIS WEBSITE
I'm looking at the emitter, as it seems cheap and simple enough for commuters.

Ah, you mean, bike tracks. Bloody seppo's not knowing the lingo. :p

Since the majority of that amount was from around 10 or more years ago, with inflation, and compound interest, I could buy a bloody car. :(

It's crazy. I was done for things I don't even remember getting done for. I rekon you b@stards in the revenue processing shed gipped me. :(

rockmuncher 12-22-04 09:56 PM

All this talk about bikes is making me sleepy :)

What are you talking about? We sat in our leather lounge chairs, and politely took calls on our gold plated phones. What makes you think the NSW Office of State Revenue was rippin' you off?

Thought you might've chimed in on that "choice of frames" thread at Cycling Fourms.

Poor bugger; he can't decide between a Colnago HM (?), a Dogma, and a Time RX7 :p

Brian 12-22-04 10:10 PM

rockmuncher 12-22-04 10:28 PM

No, I said that only in jest. Life is rosy here in A grade. Why, I even ventured outside and posted in another thread for the first time in ages :)

No he means footpaths. Road Rules in NSW, Vicko, SA, and WA allow an adult to ride with a child aged 12 or under on a footpath. Bike paths as you call 'em generally are shared pathways. There are very few legally designated bike paths in Australia (from which pedestrians are banned). Most are in SA, I think. The road rules in Tas, SE Qld, and NT allow riding on footpaths by anyone except where prohibited by signage (such as in high-pedestrian traffic precincts. Not that I condone it, unless it makes my travel more efficient by by-passing one-way streets.

No wonder you roadies get yourselves into strife. No idea... :-(

The brown-nose gnome has hurt his back at training, with scans revealing a bulging disc.
Hopefully "Herb" will get a call-up

Brian 12-23-04 12:05 AM

I see how it is now. I'm gone for a couple of hours, and the party stops. Face it, you can't keep the thread going without me and my giant stirring spoon. Time for a nap.

Go Matty. Most stylish batsman I've seen.

Rowan 12-23-04 12:10 AM

Phew... thanks for the bike bit at the end there. Couldn't stand *another* move!!
