Biking vs. Cycling. Which do you prefer?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Biking vs. Cycling. Which do you prefer?

I personally prefer cycling as it makes me feel like a professional

But really, in my opinion, cycling is more specific a word than biking.

Sometimes non-cyclists confuse "biking" with motorcycling.

Cycling. Although, I mix and match biking and cycling. Between biker and cyclist, I 100% prefer cyclist. Biker implies to most that I have a grizzly beard, shaggy hair, and a shinier, heavier, louder bike.

I say both depending on the audience. I'm more prone to say biking around people I know because they know I ride and get what I mean. But I tend to say cycling or bicycling around people who may not know I ride as a lot of people think I'm talking about a motorcycle if I say things like bike or biking.

Cycling and cyclist. I hate it when people say biking or biker because everyone assumes motorcycle.

Velocipeding

"Biking" has been appropriated by motorciclists!

"Cycling" sounds too much like I'm one'a them guise who buys $400 carbon handlebars and uses a power meter....

"Fredulating" seems appropriate...but I don't think most would know what it means- so I usually just say "riding my bike", or to those who know me, I say "velocipeding"- my personal favorite.

I move that we make "velocipeding" the official term!

"Cycling", to me, only applies to the road bike - lycra thing. Riding a hybrid around your neighborhood, or mountain biking, or a tri bike... not cycling. If you don't worry about The Rules, at least some of them... not cycling.

I'm not a cyclist by that standard, for whatever it's worth.
