I've been snubbed, and think I've accidentally snubbed others as well.
Close to home I don't see many cyclists out, so I wave to everyone. Most usually wave back. But in busier cycling areas, I usually only wave if I see someone waving to me...otherwise I'd be waving constantly for an hour or so.
One time I was riding along a straight road solo. Was concentrating on the road, thinking about what was ahead of me, daydreaming, etc. Suddenly I saw a guy going the other direction waving wildly across the road. As soon as I could I waved back. But I felt pretty bad.
Like the OP, I've waved to some people, said, "morning," etc...and had them look at me with a blank stare. It doesn't even phase me anymore. Maybe they're deep in thought, maybe they're visiting from another country and don't know our customs/language...or maybe they just don't do that. Who knows. It has happened no matter how much everything I'm wearing matches or doesn't.

I gave up expecting waves back. I used to do a route where several teams trained over the winter. When I rode by myself and had my long sleeve team jersey, lots of waves. But when I wore a jacket or a different jersey, few waves. That told me racers, at least, only acknowledges other racers

I have been riding and in deep thought or listening to music. I'm still looking around and such though. People have passed me before and waved and I didn't even catch it till it was to late to wave back. I have also been on the other side and waved and didn't get a wave back. I have iridium glasses and you cant tell where my eyes are looking. Perhaps they weren't looking at you at all?

OP's not a true New Yorker, he's from upstate. True New Yorker would never say hello to people he passes on the street because if he did, he would never get anywhere due to sheer quantity. Grow some skin, harden up.

Has there ever been a waving thread that hasn't had a detailed description of the kit and bikes of both the wavers and snubbers?

They both looked at me (almost in unison) and then looked away without so much as a nod. I actually rode away pissed. They're that effing cool? What gives? The only thing I can think is they looked at me and said to themselves "This guy is not a serious cyclist, we're not even going to acknowledge him."

there are rules to cycling. many of them involve recognizing another cyclist.
if their kit doesn't match - ignore
if their bike costs less than yours - ignore
if you are on a recovery ride and you are passed - ignore
if you pass someone else - obviously they need to HTFU - ignore
....and the list goes on.
Don't sweat it, they were just complying with universal cyclist code.

"At this point I was perhaps 10 feet from them."
They were going the opposite direction and you were that close? No wonder they didn't wave back! The were either terrified about a collision, or there really wasn't time to wave back as you zipped by each other.

I never wave on my motorcycle anymore because I had gotten so used to waving I started to wave before I could really tell what it was I was waving at! Waving to dudes on scooters is forbidden in the crotch rocket world.

I used to ride a Suzuki Marauder 1600. I was on everyone's do not wave list.

This from a rider that has to stop every ten feet for a traffic light or get run over by a taxi. Move upstate. Take a real ride.

If they look like they just rode out of a catalog.....ignore
If their bike is worth more than my wife's used car....ignore
It they are the type to go on "recovery rides" (unless they lost their license for that DUI and are going to an AA meeting type of recovery ride)......ignore.
But if I pass someone else I always say hi, particularly if they are on a roadie!

I want to see if anyone here has some insight into something that happened today... maybe I'm missing something obvious. I went for a ride today, a little 18 mile loop just to break up the day. As I was returning home I passed two cyclists in full kit. The road is very narrow and very much a back road. As I approached them I waved and said, "How ya' doing?" At this point I was perhaps 10 feet from them. They both looked at me (almost in unison) and then looked away without so much as a nod. I actually rode away pissed. They're that effing cool? What gives? The only thing I can think is they looked at me and said to themselves "This guy is not a serious cyclist, we're not even going to acknowledge him."
I'll give some more detail so as to give some perspective and to possibly offer some explanation. I could not tell what their kit said, but it was matching. I didn't even see what kind of bikes they were on except that they were nice road bikes. I was traveling at perhaps 15 miles and hour and them more like 12. They were pedaling slowly almost as if they were just winding down from a ride or warming up. The ground was flat and I was just coming off of a slight decline. There was no way they didn't see me wave, although I guess they may not have heard me say anything... they were wearing ear warmer things. I am clearly not a true roadie with my nondescript "kit" and I was wearing a Giro urban/all purpose style helmet with the old "team Z" logo on it. My bike is a hot pink, 25 year old Greg Lemond steel framed bike, but it does have all new parts (mix of Veloce and Ultegra). My shoes are SPD style and clearly not road shoes. My saddle bag is a little larger than most roadies.
I am clearly not a dedicated roadie, but I always see other cyclists along the route and I always wave and so do they. I would not think much of this, but we were so close and traveling so slow it was obvious that they intentionally ignored me. Am I not aware of some serious roadie code? Does anybody know roadies who won't wave at other cyclists they deem to be less deserving? I know this shouldn't bother me, but it does. This was not a life changing event and I won't lose sleep over it, I promise, but I thought the 41 could give me some insight. At any rate, I'll try to make my kit match my bike a little better next time I step out

Yes, this thread and forum clearly proves the above. It is more like a sisterhood with all the talk about losing weight beyond what is reasonable and if apparel matches the ride or other apparel.
