Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Zipp vs HED

Anyone have an opinion- Zipp 101 vs either HED Ardennes FR(about $100 more) or HED Ardennes SL(about $100 less). Both are low profile alum clinchers, wider than standard rims. Anyone ridden both and care to offer an opinion?

If comparing the 101 to the Ardennes, I would go with the 101s. They are more versatile, more aero, and in your case cheaper. If comparing carbon clinchers or tubulars, I would go HED, cheaper, more durable.

Hi,big fan of the HEDs here. 100 grams less than the 101's. IMO, the most versatile wheel out there, so different opinion from soulbike. HED publishes their aero specs for the Ardennes, couldn't find that info on the 101's. Ardennes were designed to be the most aero aluminum clincher so not sure if 101's are any better. If 101's are more aero, it is certainly only by a hair. My Ardennes roll smooth, fast, and they are great wheels. 101's are great too so you can't go wrong with either. Just my experience and opinion

I don't have experience with either 1, so buy the 1 that looks the coolest...

I was just looking at the same wheels. I ended up getting the Ardennes SL. The FR isnt that much lighter, and comes with titanium skewers. I couldn't justify the price difference. Arts cyclery also has the SL for $825 right now making it quite a bit cheaper than the FR or the Zipp 101. That also includes free vittoria open corsa evo slick tires and free tubes.

Mine just came today, and I havent had a chance to ride them yet.
