Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bought used Gavin Road bike did i do okay?

So I bought a used "gavin" bike which is like a bikes direct bike (but cheaper and a different website) locally off craigslist.

I paid $250

it has:

Shimano sora Shifters /brake levers (thumb shift)
Tiagra 9 speed groupset
Carbon Fiber Fork
Alexrims R500 wheels

everything else was no name.

I bought some zefal/walmart bottle cages for it, some wellgo pedals and cages, and replaced the stem and handle bar with a 3T ARX stem, and a set of bontranger SSR VR road drop bars.

I originally thought I did okay, however reading up on this site makes me re-think my purchase.

I decided to go this route after seeing the pricetag on various 105 equipped bikes ($999) and ultegra equipped bikes ($3995) at the local bike shop.

Too late to ask now. Just ride it and have fun.
Be prepared for a flat tire every now & then and you should be all set.

If it fits and you love riding it, then it was a bargain.. I had Sora for 3 years and never had an issue, loved it. Don't believe everything you read on the net, you don't need a $3000 bike to enjoy road cycling. You're better off to start low and when you learn what it is you like in a road bike you can upgrade or replace later. Congrats on your purchase.

If it's in good shape, I'd say it's a decent deal!

You bought a bike and you are riding it? If so then $250 sounds great.

On another subforum of this site, people are talking about $200 fat bikes from WalMart.
$250 on a bike that is actually rideable sounds like a great deal.

Thank you!!

Only thing that was worrying me was that people kept saying how fast the old model sora shiftera break vs the new sti sora shifters

Or how fast tiagra derails. Fail i was seeing figures like 100 300 miles and i bought this stuff used so i was fearing i was going to have to dump ultegra momey into my entry level bike just to get it running for a few momths

....was just at the LBS and saw a Sram crank in the glass case for $1995.99, so getting a whole ridable bike for $250 is a steal.

A similarly equipped new Trek or Specialized would probably be $850+ and I'm sure it's just as good and at half the price people would be trying to sell a big name bike for used. I'd say that's a great deal.

I had a bike that I loved dearly which had 10-year-old Sora shifters which still worked like new. I only had it for a year - got it used from a friend in terrible condition, but slowly brought it back into shape.
