Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Regarding my Park Tension Meter that didn't agree with the phone app. I have sent it to Park for calibration/repair and if necessary spring replacement, ALL FOR FREE. Neat, huh? They aren't charging for this service "at this time." When I get it back, I will compare it again to the phone app. If there is still disagreement, I will favor the Park result. Having said that, I think I will try to set up a calibration table (much like the one that comes with the Park tool) to convert the phone app readings into Park tool results (in kgf, not Park meter readings). If you believe the Park tool, especially after calibration, that would be a great way to fix any problems with the phone app and make it fully usable.

Let's see what Coach has to say.

You guys don't just keep a piano in your shop and calculate the key tone?

Not sure what you mean. I wouldn't imagine the phone app assigns a tension to the tone on a theoretical basis, but rather by a calibration data set that matches real mechanical measurements to spoke tones. I just don't know why the calibration data used by the phone app doesn't match my tension meter results.

I'd be interested in hearing about it, too, but for $5' I might just do it. I've got a wheel with one of those odd spokes that won't stay tensioned. I'd love to see how far out it is.

So what was the result from your properly calibrated TM-1?

Just weird results. Not consistent. Very dependent upon room noise. Also too much affected by the spokes touching in a cross pattern. My TM-1 was recently calibrated by Park, but there was no relationship between values from the TM-1 and the app. Nice idea, but IMO it just doesn't work very well. About like listening to the tones yourself.

It'll be cool to see how it compares with that.
It might be interesting to test with diff tire pressures and no tire.

Not really. We know spoke tension decreases with increasing tire pressure. Any accurate meter should measure that correctly. If it doesn't work well with no tire, what can you learn with a tire.

I don't need a piano. I just match the pitch I hear and check it with a tuner. Could also be done with a tuning fork or other pitched musical instrument. No, I'm not joking.

I wouldn't suggest it's as accurate as using a tensiometer. But there was a time when those measuring devices did not exist.

I expect a number of peeps will just take their phone to the bike and make assumptions.

Three year thread bump...

I was reminded today and I wanted to note (heheh) that I tried using the Gates belt tension app (free!) to measure other notes, and it works well up into the hundreds of hertz. It should work for this.

I use one of those for tensioning the Gates belt on my tandem. I'll have to play with it now on spokes just to see how even they are.
