Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's not fun about that KOM? Seems like a good segment to me.

Strava lets you compare past performance as well, and your social network of friends who you ride with and add on Strava is up to you. Nobody is asking you to add testosterone driven racers.

I just joined strava 2 weeks ago and it has been cool just to watch my own personal progress. Gives me something to compare and race against. I know I will never be #1 KOM on the hill rides we do, but I was pleasantly surprised with where I stand against other riders on the same segments. I dont look at it to seriously, more fun than anything along with being able to track your miles.

I created a segment near my house and was KOM for a few days. Until Taylor Phinney rode by.

I think he meant going all out for 2:30 is not fun. Puke inducing and satisfying if you get the KOM perhaps, but not fun.

I did two long-distance events in the last month. Both were officially timed.

4/13, "Mulholland Challenge". Median time (Strava): 9:27. Median time (official, preliminary results): 9:47.
3/23, "Solvang Double Century". Median time (Strava): 13:30. Median time (official): 13:49.

Well now if you're going to ask if Strava users on *that* segment are faster than average, then I'd say yes. People that willingly ride bikes up 6%+ grades are going to be stronger than an average person on a bike IMO, and when you compound that with the cross section that also uses an app to upload their stats I think you know what you're going to get.

If you pull the strava segment from a mup in a park, it's probably a lot less competitive.

I could see average speed being off ... but how does one get timing wrong?
Doesn't strava work with some kind of start/stop?

Most bike races around here have at least 30 guys posting results on Strava. Seems similar elsewhere. Not as many pros but amongst amateur racers I would say the number using Strava is close to 50% and growing.

That section of road is always incorrectly referred to River Road when it's actually Henry Hudson Drive.

In other words, for any but the steepest and most out-of-the-way segments, we can assume that peloton times are being posted.

I'm thinking that's why it's off. Official ride time includes stops for water, lights, stop signs, etc... on your way. Strava only includes "moving" time, say when your speed is above a certain mph (I'm unsure what it is).

I think Strava is the best thing ever!
It allows me to see the training patterns, power output, mileage etc of many of the guys I race against...
Also allows me to humble big mouth know it alls who shoot their mouth off about how fast they are (we have many of them)...

And no my real name has never been on strava nor has my picture...

That is incorrect.

For each ride Strava will display a "Time" which is your moving time. As well as an "Elapsed Time" which is total amount of time the device was recording.

The Strava mobile display will usually only show the "Time" value but both metrics are displayed on the website.

The threshold for what constitutes "moving" appears to be fairly low. I have some rides where I never actually stopped my bike and Time=Elapsed Time where the minimum speed registered is 4.0 mph. Of course, given the error rate of GPS-based speed, this may be an incorrect value but I believe the sentiment is correct.

yes, plus the fact i put in like 15 seconds to the second best time, so it's not even like i can goof around with another 1/2

You're just encouraging "strava stalkers" who will track you down and pwn you on all of your segments.

It's kind of like how people have 50 million friends on facebook, but when they turn the computer off they still live in their mom's basement.

passing people on a ride means nothing becasue someone u passed could have been on their zone1 recovery ride and you (or others) mr. speed gonzales could be blasting by at max speed. That comparison doesn't really tell u anything. The fact that people are passing you on rides tells me something though.

also on a climb, rider-type comes into play. Loads of bic bois can hammer flats and crush down hill segments, place high, but when the road goes upward..... well the cupcakes weigh them down.

this isn't even me trying to troll, just saying things that makes sense in real life.

Timing is different because only a subset of participants uploads their data on Strava, and the ones who do tend to be faster than the ones who don't.

True statement.
A teammate and I were on a fun recovery ride when a dude came flying by us (common Strava segment), slowed down and gave us the look of disgust trying to taunt us on to go. My teammate and I looked at each other, paused for a second then both burst out laughing at this guy pulling away from us...
Perhaps if he had been there a few minutes prior he would have seen my teammate and I go head to head in a 1,600+ watt drag race (I lost to the little punk)...
Me thinks that dude may have been in over his head had we given him a go...
