Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cyclist Body

Anyone else have a spouse or significant other that complains about their body changes since they've started cycling? Yeah, I am thinner and healthier - but apparently I am horrible to cuddle with thanks to losing my padding and my massive legs that crush anything in their path.

My ex wife's family was awful but I no longer have to deal with them for the most part. Each one was 250 lbs or more and couldn't recognize a normal weight as their perceptions were skewed by their girth.

Depends on the particular cyclist body type. Sprinter/TT types are studly. Wimpy little climbing geeks, not so much.

If I dip below 157lbs @ 6'1" the wife alarm starts going off. I eat more pizza to compensate, and everybody is happy.

5'11" and pretty muscular build. When I hit 170 my wife started handing me bowls of ice cream at night. I don't mind, it just slows the process and helps make sure I'm not losing too much muscle. What she really hates is the hair removal...

exactly, Sprinting, kettlebell swings, squats, deadlifts, etc. build a nice body. Weightlifting without reaching muscle fatique/exhaustion, or slow jogging, steady pacing, not so much.

Even then, with true muscle building, diet, meal planning and timing are 50% of the program.

Nice picture btw.

Bikes: Road bike is a Carbon Bianchi C2C & Grandis (1980's), Gary Fisher Mt Bike, Trek Tandem & Mongoose SS MTB circa 1992.

well at 5'11" tall and 195lbs I lack the lean cycling body but I have developed a massive and thickly muscled taint.

You guys are way too fat for this sport.

I am 6 feet 1/2 inch and generally weigh between 135-140.

Of course, my wife says I am too thin but that's ok.

5'6 and 185 10 percent body fat or 30 percent body fat? Two very different body types and builds.

Losing weight is a slow process, and such small changes may be imperceptible on a day-to-day basis. I don't think that it's unusual for someone (very close to you) to not notice changes that are more obvious to those that see you less frequently.
