Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Things look scratched and moved a little, but not broken. Your scratches don't look bad either.

Some of the chainring teeth where broken and I just had to replace it. Thank you again for all of the replies.
You realize that modern chainring teeth are shaped to assist in shifting, right? So misshapen or chipped looking teeth could have been as designed. Did a bike shop tell you that they were broken? Just wondering.

Last time I did this much damage I picked my bike up and rode another 60 miles...

Uphill, both ways, through snow...

Seriously, I hope you are feeling better. Crashing on the bike of any sort suck. Take your bike to a local shop, have them take a look. If you have a good shop you can trust them to tell you what you can, should, and need to do to the bike.

"Serious crash?" Hah!

Want to know what a serious crash looks like?

The inventory, from head to toe:

1) Concussion.
2) Broken right clavicle.
3) Broken and bruised ribs.
4) Pneumothorax (partially collapsed right lung).

That was September 15. By Thanksgiving, I was back on the bike.

I would agree. No broken bones or 911 required.

When I was 14(1981), I was almost killed by an elderly driver.

When I was 36(2003), I got a hairline fracture in my writing wrist. I was casted for six weeks.

When I was 42(2009), I got another hairline fracture in the same wrist, casted for six weeks.

I am glad the OP's injuries were not even close to that.

Makes you realize how tough pro cyclists are. It seems like having collar bone injuries are nothing to them. They're back on the bike in weeks time.

...unless you really got into a Allessandro Ballan type of accident.

go with that previous suggestion for tegaderm. 2.5 weeks ago i was doing my first cat5 race ever...and of course, i get into a crash with ~12 other people. nothing horrible, but some road rash on my arm that burned like a son of a *****.

another cycling friend told me about Tegaderm. it just covers it up and lets your body do its own thing. i changed mine every ~3 days. i got the 2.5x2.5" sized ones and needed 2 and overlapped them. wont come off in the shower at all, keeps dirt out. 1.5 weeks later, you could barely even tell it happened. a week later (now), there is a very faint pink mark. you wouldnt see it if i didnt point it out.

im ordering more of it online since its so much cheaper (.37 cents each for the 2.5x2.5" size vs about $1.50/each at cvs in the 8 pack)...im sure i'll need them again at some point

These injuries were accompanied with 4 minutes unconsciousness, a hematoma the size of an orange with similar cuts to left hip and elbow and a broken rib. Still I would call it a minor crash as I was able to ride 20 miles home with no problems save pain.
Serious crashes you don't walk or ride away from. Yours is a trivial crash. Still be careful, one never knows when the end is near.

Been there, twice. The first one happened in Berlin, Germany. Very strange experience. I came to consciousness sitting up on an exam table in a Berlin hospital, talking to a German ER physician who spoke English with a combined German accent/southern twang (he had done a residency in SC). That's how you know you were semi-conscious, when you come to sitting up, and then they tell you they have been conversing with you, but you have absolutely no memory up until that point, like you had just woken up. My consciousness that whole day was in and out, there are stretches of that day after the ER I have no memory of, even though I was walking around with my family. So it was a substantial concussion I suppose, but no other injuries other than a black eye, road rash, etc.

Surgeonstone is correct, if that's the extent of the injuries sustained in a bike crash, you were fortunate.

By the way, if you get knocked cold in a bike crash wearing your helmet, imagine the consequences had you not been wearing one. I'm convinced my helmet has possibly saved my life on two occasions, I never ride without one. I have some road nazi friends who ride without a helmet sometimes, they seem to think that's Euro-cool, they really, really don't get it.

I can only imagine what these wounds would have been like without a helmet. The one on was shattered.

I have three helmets on my wall. One is split down the middle, and in two pieces. The second has the rear left quarter missing. Still never found it.

The third is the one I wear. Always.
