COSMIC CARBONE Substitute
I can't afford the Carbone's. Any ideas for a cheaper, strong, areo, wheel. A deep dish rim 30 to 40mm, clincher. I'm not concerned about weight, just want a wheel I can hit some potholes in and not worry about it. I'm 150 lbs and ususlly do fast group rides, centuries, and some distance stuff.

Why would you use a timetrial wheel for that kind of riding? Why not a well-built 32-spoke wheelset or an off-the-shelf all-around decent wheelset like Mavic Ksyrium Equips?

Aerospokes are very nearly unbreakable. However, they are heavy and not very aerodynamic. It's what I use, though, for anything except a race or high-altitude, long-distance climbing. I never, ever, have to worry about breaking a spoke, because they don't have any. They are pothole resistant.
I have friends (I think they are friends...) who think 200K is a good warmup. Most of them are frail, starved, wimpy people who don't have to worry about breaking spokes much. When I do these rides with them, I want equipment that won't let me down hours away from the cars.

Thanks for the ideas. I like the velocity rims and the AC420's. I read varying reports about the areoheads but they are relatively cheap and heavy. I don't see a down side to an aero wheel unless you want something lighter.

i might add real designs. their ultrasonic 40 wheelset retails for about $1000, and weights 1550g. a buddy of mine raced spinergy tilium wheels last year and really liked them [they look cool, too!]. i suspect they cost less than $1000. the heds are expensive.

Dave at Speedreams will build you a set of custom wheels to meet your exact needs. It will run you around $500 for a set. You tell him what you look for, your weight, riding style, etc, and he'll come up with the ideal wheel (rims, hubs, spokes - count, type, tension, etc.)

A tad heavy!!! Don't deep V's weigh like 500gms per rim or something. I've got a pair of deep V 28's. I never thought you could use 28 spoke wheels as training wheels...and I'm fat!
Reliable, but heavy. Throw your spoke key away but avoid any hills.

How about Velomax Tempest II? 1500gms for the set, $749 at www.wisecyclebuys.com. Nice! There's even a new set on ebay for $535 if you want to track it:
