Strange buzzing/vibration sound coming from internal cable?
Hi All,
I just got into road riding (used to MTB and am a runner). Love this sport!
I have a weird issue that I was hoping some of you could help/advise with.
2012 Specialized Secteur Apex Comp (internal cable routing)
I hear this strange buzzing sort of vibration (but more of a buzz noise) coming from my bike. I know its not the wheels, brakes, brake calipers, handlebars, shifters, crank, etc. The noise seems to be coming from the top tube area. I called Specialized and the CSR asked me to ride the bike and move the brake line cable a bit and see if the noise lessens/changes. Well I tried that and it definetly changed, not lessened. Seems as if this buzzing noise is coming from the cable going through the top tube.
Has anyone heard of this or have any experience in this? I want to know a bit more information before I take it to the LBS. I was able to find one site that mentions internal cable vibration on a Cervelo. But nothing much else. Just curious what I should do/say. I love the bike, but the buzzing noise is driving me crazy. Any speed below 18MPH and you can hear it. Ride slower than 15MPH and its pretty bad. Thanks in advance.

I haven't done it myself (don't own bikes with internal cable routing), but I've heard that one fix is to put zip ties on the internal cable so that the excess zip tie tail that sticks out keeps the cable from rattling around.

I think, but don't know for sure, that the cable AND the cable housing goes through your top tube. If that's the case then the housing is bouncing around inside your top tube. You need to somehow stop the housing from moving around or from rattling against the frame.
There are a variety of ways of doing this. You could cut a piece of a shower poof thing (the scrubby thing they sell for 99 cents at a pharmacy type place) and stuff it inside the frame. This would help keep the housing from moving. I've heard of stuffing newspaper pieces also but that would retain moisture.
You can pull the cable housing more taut inside the top tube so that it doesn't rattle. Then zip tie just where it appears outside the frame so it can't go back in.
You can push more cable housing in so it sits against the inside of the frame tube. This keeps it from rattling because it's already pushed against the frame.
Etc.
hope this helps

Iam mechanically moronic. But hope my LBS can handle this. I will write down some of the tips. Hopefully they can fix or bike has to be replaced. Specialialized said that should be happening, so this is a bit frustrating.
