I switch between these two:
I'll probably commute on this once it's built, although I won't be mounting fenders on it.

Road bike.
Fortunately for me, my 12 mile commute is really a ride in the country. Two stop signs, no stop lights, few cars.

Jamis commuter.
Flat bars, fenders, 3 speed IGH, 35c tyres. Cheap enough to park anywhere.

1983 Fuji Touring Series IV for my 15-mile round trip 3-5 days a week. Added fenders, rack, trunk bag, headlight, pump and cyclocomputer. I did update to a 7-speed freewheel, and re-ring for better gear spacing. Also upgraded the DT shifters to NOS Suntour bar ends. But otherwise, the bike is stock, right down to the spare spokes on the non-drive chainstay and platform pedals with toe clips. Heavy, but reliable.

We have outdoor parking at work, but I leave a u-lock and cable buckled to the rack there. There are better bikes with cable locks, around mine, so I'm not too worried

Neither of these are current photos (the Peugeot now has a rack & I run only a single rear Ortlieb bag on the Cannondale when I commute), but these are the bikes. The Peugeot is 9 speed 105 and rather quick considering the load. The C'dale is a storied '80s touring rig that probably weighs in the 40s as a commuter, but is a great ride all around.
I also have a Casseroll I will probably press into commuter duty. For me, I suppose anything works, except I am not a fan of using any sort of backpack/messenger bag and my commute is long enough (and has enough sections where you really want to keep a decent speed) to warrant clipping in.

Wow thanks for all those answers! Some very nice bikes in there
Looks like cyclocross bikes are quite popular as commuters too.

I'll be making my very first commute this afternoon after work! I'll be using my Felt Z85, and will be clipping in. Don't have any racks or fenders and won't be carrying any bags. I brought stuff in this morning for tomorrow, and then will carry it home tomorrow evening in the car.

I have 3 road bikes, two of which I use to commute. My Soma Smoothie and 87 Schwinn Paramount see commuting duty while C'dale CAAD7 is set up for more aggressive weekend hammering. The former two have sturdier tires and shorter stems to accommodate the fact that the bike bag I carry on my back reduces my reach a bit.

My baby cakes.. 1st real road bike (real bike period) so she's real close to me. My only bike and do everything go everywhere bike except for racing because I'm too fat for.... you know the rest. Hopefully next year!
150-200 mi a week every week makes a shrinking gut and riding the drops more comfortably effortless!
edit: Yes, the saddle has been adjusted to proper tilt since this picture was taken as well as other slight adjustments to cleanliness.

Got a new frame recently but kept all the old bits. Nashbar Touring frame with panniers and 7 year old Sora brifters that are still shifting great! 6 mile commute each way, every day.
