I ride to work -- 8 miles -- every day rain or shine.
Sometimes I take my Roubaix, but only if I'm training after work.
Here's my commuter.

Yes, majority of my winter miles are commuting (21mi each way, 3-4 times a week). I have a cross bike converted to road gearing with fenders and 28s that does most of that winter duty. Once the rain is less likely, I use a steel Ritchey Breakaway (no fenders... 25 width tires) for commuting/training. Race bike almost never commutes.

I asked that question because I was visiting my LBS to get my first road bike (I'm looking for the Trek 2.1 or Devinci SL4) and when I suggested that I might interested in getting a Trek Crossrip at some point as my commuter, the guy was surprised. He seemed to think it was a weird choice, given I would already have an aluminium road bike. But, to me, the Crossrip is quite different (sturdier, more relax geometry, disc brakes, bigger wheels, etc.), even though it's an alu+carbon fork bike.
What do you think?

I don't any more, but I used to commute on my cf road bike (inside storage of course - I'd never lock it up outside).

I have two road bikes, but for commuting I ride a Surly LHT because I wanted fat tires, rack for panniers and fenders, and a rugged frame.
After a week of driving that baby, the road bikes feel silly light.

wow how did you get a Raceblade to fit under your rear brake? Do you have that much clearance between rear tire and brake?
I also have a set of Raceblades but I set them up with the forward edge of the rear fender about 1/2" behind the brake. I leave about 1/2" to 3/4" clearance between the fender and the tire.

Honestly, I'm not sure how it all worked. It look me a bit but finally balanced with no rubbing and some decent clearance for debris; about 1/8"-1/2". I bought the larger ones for 25-28 tires (I believe), while I currently have a 23 on there. That may help. However, this lasted one ride in, since I had the rear rim changed due to a pothole. I haven't been able to get it right, so I may have it right up to the brake soon. I'll also be taking the rubber end cap off the rear blade as well.

Yeah I got the Raceblade XL's also, since I run 25's. Why do you want/need to take the rear mudflap off?

Have you ever found a good way to 'mark' your frame when you take them off? I haven't removed them yet and planned on it this weekend but don't want to lose the positioning. I thought small pieces of duct tape might not be noticeable and won't do permanent damage.

Mine came with clear plastic film to attach to the fork and seat stays to prevent the mounts from marring the bike finish. Those are fairly good position indicators. I just hold the fenders in place and adjust as needed, then secure the rubber straps.
I actually don't mind the rear flap, because it sits a bit farther back and down if the fender doesn't go under the brake. I think having it would make the rear fender more effective at keeping the stripe off your bike, since not all of the water thrown off the rear tire is going to make it up under the fender. I think some of it would still miss the fender and hit your back without the rear flap. Here's my bike with them installed:

Used to commute on a singlespeed Cross Check. Now I work an hour earlier and about 25 miles further away and carpool so I have one of these guys on order.
On days I don't drive I'll ride it home.
