I've got an Apple TV connected to an outboard DAC talking to an ITunes library on a macbook which usually sits in another room. No fans or drives to be heard. When the wife gets a new laptop, I'll probably just use the Mac Mini as a fileserver for iTunes.
I used to run various Linux configurations at home on PC hardware, but I got tired of the generally crappy design and integration of the hardware. Plus, I spend all day solving hard computer problems so at home I just want this stuff to work. |

What a total bummer. Loved his acting, and from all accounts he was a regular guy. He was from Park Ridge, NJ, a few miles from where I owned my last house in Bergen County.

This is what will probably be my new band, Strings Attached. I rehearsed with John and Jean last week, we'll be rehearsing weekly as our schedules permit, they are already gigging, John and I are confident that the band will be ever more marketable with my addition for a few reasons.
https://www.facebook.com/stringsattachedNY Not sure how long we'll have that young woman percussionist/drummer, she lives 90 miles away now in central Connecticut. We'll figure it out. I'm playing with John again at the open mic on Friday in Warwick. These people are becoming good friends, and on this level of music, that is by far the most important factor. But they are already gigging, and that was my goal from the start, to get out and play in front of rooms for more than a couple of songs, and this gets me there. Jeannie's voice is amazing, John has a good solid rock n roll lead male voice, I strongly feel that our vocals are among the strongest of any local band I've heard. Actually as of right now I'd say they ARE the strongest of any local band that I've heard. And that's 90% of the battle right there. That's what will land you gigs. |

I'm just annoyed no one makes a mITX case in a desktop orientation but with reasonable space. I could always just put a tower by the TV, but that looks so... gauche.

I've seen a few, but they're typically a little higher priced than I would expect. Look for HTPC cases - a lot of the horizontal cases are being categorized as such, these days.

Trust me, I've looked at all of them. I'd like something like the SG05, but wider, with the space used for additional hard drives. The Node 304 is pretty, but lacks an optical drive and is just huge for what it holds. Monoeual makes pretty cases, but no room for a real graphics card since they're half-height. I used to have a GD05, which was a nice case, but only held two hard drives (and not even really, at least with the ones I tried it with. Annoying.

Oh, and why not something like an SG01? I used one for my wife's computer, and it's not bad. It's actually a mATX, so it is a little wider. 2 optical bays, 2 HDD bays (I'm sure you could stuff more in to one of the optical bays if you don't use both).

Maybe a little taller than you want, but I'm interested to see when this actually hits the market - http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/nc...tx-case?c=home

I just use jriver. No dinking around necessary. Bit perfect output, supports FLAC, supports hi-res and isn't a slow, bloated POS like iTunes.

http://images.theage.com.au/2013/02/...128k-300x0.jpg That machine is still downstairs. I had originally purchased that machine in mid 1984. At the time it cost about $3K, which in today's money is $8000+. I quickly replaced it with a Mac IIci with a 19" Supermac monitor, a far more capable rig, but at the time that first business computer cost nearly $8K in 1992 dollars, which has to be $15K or so in today's money. The newest desktop I have now was about $2K, it's one of those new iMacs with a hybrid solid state 1TB hard drive, a ton of RAM, and it's very sleek and fast. I'm sure 22 years hence my current machine will look antiquated and sound outrageously expensive too. Hopefully I'll be retired before I'm 77. But you never know. |
Thanks everyone for the well wishes. I'm home. Wife is not. The CT scan didn't show any clots, which is what they were worried about, but her O2 sats are still too low and they didn't like a "pattern" they saw on the CT so she has been admitted. We'll see how things go. Meanwhile, the cat wants attention.

Hey pcad, leave your nose and face alone when you're on stage and talking to people!
And, how much to you concentrate on practising pronunciation and ending your words and phrases? |

Back from my 2 day ride. It was most excellent. Some rain on day 1 but perfect weather on day 2.
Did I miss anything?? |
