29" X ? X ? You get 62 inches total of the three dimensions allowed on the plane without charge. If you spread the two wheels apart sideways, you can get their total thickness down below 10 inches. That leaves you 23", just maybe 24" to work with. Is that the kind of suitcase you are looking at? Have you looked at Bike Fridays? They may give you some ideas about what is possible to pack with smaller wheels.

My main concern was whether a non S+S equipped diamond frame would fit inside the 20" x ? X ? suitcase. From the previous postings, the consensus is a regular full size frame wouldn't. I don't own a mini-velo but it seems despite their "smallness," a mini-velo frame still roughly approximates a full-size frame.

i went to france with Gavilán BFF - HOME , XS bag for my 50cm caad10 . Delta , no charge. Then air france back*, no charge. In an effort of full disclosure, i broke my shifter because i packaged my handlebars the wrong direction (facing outward) than the photos on the website. That was my fault, but also highlights one possible downside to the soft case over hard case.
i am currently in Cali (from maryland), Southwest , no charge.
Neither measured the bag, it's really close (but gavilan will also admit that it's over the limit, saying it's basically impossible without going a little over) and looks non-descript. When asked by southwest 'what's in the bag'... i went with 'physical therapy equipment', and was good to go!
I originally had questions about the durability of the softcase setup, and still i worry a little, but some bubble packaging, and some drop out spacers. It's good. It's annoying to have to take apart the fork and take off the chain and RD, etc, etc. but in order to fit anywhere near the check luggage dimensions, u have to, no matter how u slice it.

& even if it fits within the size , an airline employee can demand to see whats in the suitcase ,
And Seeing It Is a Bike , Richey Breakaway or S&S or whatever,
Gain Job advancement favor with their Company charging the Bicycle Fee anyhow .
I Have had conversations with people, Here, starting their OR Coast Trip, and that has been what they experienced.

What I do is that I fly with airlines that charges cheap on bike bags. I've been to EU the past 2 years with a Pika and a BIKND Jetpack and I just got charged $25 each way.
