wtf happened to this thread?
Also, I got my nascar education from watching "talladega nights", so sorry if you're offended by my ignorance. I have no idea what it's like to drive a 150 mph race in a 120 deg F incubator. But really, you should blame Will Ferrell.
Pro wrestling is infested with steroids, for what? No wonder they need ******* to protect the people around them.

Bikes: Three road bikes. Two track bikes.
So, how many times did you have to type that before you got all the caps just right?

Some of my friends were irritated when a stranger jumped on their paceline, sucked wheel at the back all the time and outsprinted them all at the end.

Yeah, but you should have heard how he praised your guys at the post ride TV interview. He said he couldn't have done it without you.

coom, coomb [kuːm]
n
Dialect chiefly Scot and Northern English waste material, such as dust from coal, grease from axles, etc.
[C16 (meaning: soot): probably a variant of culm1
Presumably used as a verb, cooming oneself would be to make onself into waste?

I think we've learned more about NASCAR, wrestling and chess here than what the OP requested, this is all very confusing.
Can someone please summarize - what speed should we pull at in a paceline and for how long?

You should pull at the pace the group is going unless you want to PURPOSEFULLY increase the pace. As in the have a REASON.
The faster the pace the shorter the pulls. Some workhorses will take monster pulls which only makes sense if they truly are that much stronger than the rest of the group.
A typical fast pace line means 20 pedal strokes in the wind and then rotate back. If it is a medium tempo then the time can very quite a bit.
Guys who can't pull through should NOT rotate with the group but should sit in the back and leave a bike length gap for people dropping back to slide into the line. People eating should also do this. No-one but a n00wb should have a problem with this.
The trick is communication. Most of this is non-verbal. Your actions should clearly signal your intentions. If they don't, or people are having trouble figuring out what you want to do speak up. Keep it to less than five words.
If the group you ride with hasn't figured this out yet find another group.
