I've ridden 9 speed Tiagra and currently 105 and I would say for compatibility I would go for Tiagra. My wife has the older 9 speed Sora now and it would be tough to upgrade any of her components unless we completely replace everything.

I didn't care for the latest Sora when I test rode a bike with it. I have 10sp Tiagra on my secondary bike (it's 4600, not 4700 BTW) and it shifts great. However, my hands aren't huge and I find the Tiagra hoods too small for longer rides. I prefer the my 5700 105 hoods.

Asking yet again - has anyone found an actual place to buy a full new-gen Sora group separately from the frame other than ebay? Kind of pointless to debate the issues of Sora components or not if you can't even get it.
I've noticed that while these parts are near-ubiquitous on new bikes (and work perfectly well, if not excellently well), Shimano seems to really make these low-level replacements extremely hard to get - essentially a forced upgrade.

BTW, these guys are my LBS, too. Great people and great service. I order by 1:00, stuff is here for me to pick up next day.

Wiggle and Ribble also have the low-end groups sometimes. Not always in stock though.

Bike Stop. Not sold as a group, but you can get the levers, crank and ders individually.

Again, despite it being ubiquitous on entry level bikes, Shimano makes it near-impossible to get replacement groups for Sora or below. (Probably because they do actually work very well - no forced upgrade if they did.)
