TREK 1.5 upgrade

Hi all,

I'm new here. I have a brand new TREK 1.5 2013. My plan was that before I buy it, I buy a middle level (if it is) bike and I will upgrade it a later. I do not want to replace the frame. I like the shape of this frame and the blue-white paint. So I would like to upgrade only the 'hardware' (I'm a software developer ). I'm beginner of this. I've never upgraded a bike before. At first I will upgrade the brakes to Ultegra 6800. It have to compatible with my bike. I read good reviews of this type. But what next? The new Ultegra 6800 is 11 speed. My one is 10 so I don't want to upgrade to 11 speed. So I have to choose Ultegra 6700 or 105 parts. I need your advice! Maybe all parts are good (will be good) on my bike and the upgrade an unnecessary step? I ride on bike per week approximately 150-200 km.

What's wrong with the brakes? Unless they don't stop very well, wait until the pads wear out and put some Kool Stop pads on them.

About the only thing I'd recommend changing is the saddle if it doesn't work for you, and the pedals to something clipless.

Otherwise just replace things, like the tires, when they wear out or get broke.

Not much reason to upgrade the brakes. You could do a full upgrade to 6700 but that gets pricey pretty quickly. Wheels are frequently a good upgrade choice. The saddle is basically a given. The biggest upgrades you'll get will be comfort related, clothing, shoes, saddle.

I read that in more forums that the brakes on this bike is not so good. I have no experience about this. In my country the car drivers are not so friendly with the cyclist. So I need good bakes.

So you say that the other parts will be good until they will wears out.

I bought new Bontrager shoes and a Shimano SPD pedals, plus cloths. I did't changed the saddle yet. It good within 30-40km, but after... I have an old Raleigh bike also and I changed the original saddle on that bike with a new one (ergonomic one). No change. I think the problem is with me

Is there any huge differences between my system and the 105 or Ultegra? I read a lot about those systems and about mine, but I have no experiences. I know that the 105 and Ultegra systems are better than my, but how much? I read that the 10 speed Tiagra is nearly as good as the 105. I'm not a racer, I bike only for my fun so I could feel something difference If I use an Ultegra 6700 shifter? Or a 6800 brake?

Tiagra is totally fine and the Trek 1.5 is a good bike as it is. Don't waste your money on 105 or Ultegra parts until you wear out the ones you have already: the differences in performance are minimal. If you've got money burning a hole in your pocket, buy a Garmin 500/510 with heart rate and cadence sensors and start logging your rides on Strava. Buy good lights and perhaps SKS fenders if you're going to ride in the dark and wet. Perhaps upgrade your tires, but even then wait until you wear out the ones you have. Better brake pads may improve stopping power, but by how much depends on how bad the ones you already have are. Buy a bike workstand and some tools and learn how to repair and maintain your bike. If you still have the bug after a year or two of riding your 1.5, buy a nice new bike and keep your Trek as your winter/beater bike. As for now, just get out and ride.

Thank you for your answers! You persuade me about that my bike is as good as it is.

bobones: I purchased one Garmin 500 from UK eBay last week I use it for two days, I used my iPhone previously but it wasn't so accurate.

You are right, I really need a workstand and tools and I have to learn to maintain and repair my bikes.

At the core level, Tiagra/105/Ultegra/DuraAce are very similar. There are differences in component weight, you could probably lose maybe a pound off the bike going to Ultegra, and the vast majority of that will be in the crank.

The main differences are subtle. As you go up, components are largely designed to be more robust, and easier to maintain. These are very subtle changes here, plastic replaced with metals, minor tweaks to cable adjusters, that sort of thing. From a robust standpoint, there isn't really a reason to upgrade until you break something. The other difference is in how the levers feel. The shifters will feel more crisp, take slightly less force and slightly less travel as you go up. Again, these are subtle differences and unless you're looking for it or very used to one, you might not notice.

The next time you're in the local bike shop, ask to take a look at a bike with Ultegra, and you can try for yourself.

With the Trek 1.5 upgrading to a better groupset would be well worth it, as the Alpha frame is fairly good for aluminium. I had one briefly (2009 Trek 1.9 originally specced with Ultegra 6600), with my DA7800 on it and only sold it as it was too big at 60cm - the ride was good though.

I, like you, have been enjoying my purchase of a new (leftover) trek 2.1 All the bells and whistles at the stores and all the forum fodder is overwhelming and just makes you want to upgrade!... I say this, each item you think you need should have a mileage requirement. If you think you need brakes you may as well ride the bike for 100 miles and then decide if you feel that way. I wanted it all in the beginning. I held myself back and all I do is ride my bike. I'm blown away by the tech in these newer bikes and I can't see making any upgrades until I see something that actually is in need of being "better" or more functional. Also, by waiting, you reserve some of that hard earned cash to be used for any repairs or issues that may arise.

I know for me my secondary purchases have gone like this.

trek 2.1 with a helmet and a $35 cyclecomputer
two bottle cages and two camelback 25oz water bottles. (buy camelbacks insulated with jet nozzle)
floor pump with guage
seat bag with spare tube, c02 inflator, loose allen keys, tube patch kit, exact bus fair (emergency get home), presta valve adapter in case of needing to pump from a schrader pump, and my ID with housekey.
Then I bought my girl a trek skye S mountain bike for our evening rides together.

The list of wants is much larger than what I've purchased but for now this has me going strong. Since I'm still new and working my way to more endurance I don't need all the high end gear due to not being able to ride much over an hour at this point before my big ole' legs turn to rubber.

Good luck with your purchase and your upgrades just don't forget... riding it is the most important and you've already paid for it. Adding more money to it doesn't make the mileage add up, only you do.

Dont bother upgrading the components at this time. Actually I highly discourage it.

However if you insist, the best "upgrade" money is spent on contact points and fit pieces first. So for me, saddle, bars, bar tape, shoes, pedals. If I had money left over I'd look at getting some sweet wheels and tires. Keep in mind the parts I listed above can easily cost up to $400-$800, the wheels could be and other $300-$1000.

Also consider wear parts such as chains, cassettes, cables can be a huge upgrade after a year or 2 when to originals may be worn out or poorly maintained. I recommend picking up and extra cycling kit, socks, gloves. possibly a front and rear light you can ride in the evening even as the days get shorter. Possibly even some cold weather gear depending on where you live.

Brakes, deralieurs, shifters dont wear out as fast as you may think. And even the lower end stuff is good. I can understand wanting a matching set of Tiagra or 105 if you have some Tekro stuff that looks odd, but dont expect a performance upgrade. Spending money replacing perfectly good components does not add value to your cycling experience.

The frame is a winner. I toured with a group this summer, and one guy rode a stock 1.2 (same frame) with 2 back panniers and the bike made it, wheelset and all with only adjustments and one new chain (and the stock tires!)

My thought would be to keep the cheaper (but still good) stuff that's already on the bike, especially if you ride a lot. Some of the lower end stuff seems to be more durable anyway. Save the money for the day you need to take it to the shop for something and slap down the cash more worry-free. : )

Which saddle (brand, shape, etc) are you suggest to me? My legs are not tired after 40-50km but the sitting is not so comfortable (I use cloths).

And pls tell me about the differences between wheels and tires. What can I gain with a better wheels and tires? Originally I bought the bike with Bontrager R1 700x23c.

My main goal to is to keep 30km/h for a long distance. Therefore I train every day, I ride 42km. I have a good track/route. A little uphill for 20km than turn back.

Upgrading a brand new bike is a complete waste of money. Just
buy a new bike with the quality of bits you want, it is far cheaper.

I agree with others on the saddle. If you don't like the stock one, it's an upgrade that you can actually feel. Personally, I love Fizik Saddles. I have the Arione, but they have several different ones that have different attributes. That said, there are many premium saddles that are quality, so you may want to visit a shop and test a few. Every body is literally different and what you prefer may not be known until you test them.

Bontrager tires are fine, but if you want more flat resistance, you may go for something like the Continental GP 4000S (the black chili compound version). Bontrager makes a "hard case" tire that will give you good flat protection, but the ride won't be as good as the Conti.

Hi all,

You were right. I bought the the Continental tires for my 1.5. It was a perfect choice. I didn't upgrade my bike. Last year I bought a Madone 5.2 2014. This was my upgrade. That's a great bike also. I kept the 1.5 for my Tacx trainer. I'm thinking about that I'll buy a new rim for my 5.2. But I'm not a competitor. So maybe it is unnecessary for a biker like me. What do you think? Maybe this is acceptable for me. Price is good, but I really need it???
