Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How do you guys get so fast??

Well I know how(practice and pushing yourself), but its crazy! I was riding today and I got a lift(draft) offered to me. Dude was averaging like 30mph. I stayed with him for about 2-3 miles then I just couldnt hang on anymore. I am working on getting my speed up but im wondering why I couldnt stay with him while i was drafting him? He has serious skills. LOL. When im doing intervals, I end up dropping off quickly. What am I doing wrong?

What are you doing wrong? That is easy. You are on this forum posting about riding instead of riding.

You're doing nothing wrong, you just haven't been at it long enough. Keep incorporating intervals and hills into your rides and you'll get faster, assuming you're putting in enough overall mileage. Set a minimum base of say, 150 per week, and try to get over 200 when you can.

But 30 mph on even a flat surface for any extended distance is way fast, unless you're riding in a pack.....are you certain of that velocity?

Riding is the only way.

Ride more, you'll get faster.

Well as they say and have for many generations.................practice makes perfect. Seriously, you have to do alot of training. Even I cannot keep that average for long. I can average about 20 mph almost with a combo of mountains and flats. If total flats I am not sure I could do as good as with mountains. Reason I say this is because flats are sooooooooo boring!!!! And I think I would lose interest. I like climbing on all my rides!

So go and ride until your heart feels like it will explode. And maybe do some trainer sessions like the Coach Troy DVD's.

If you can do 30mph for 2-3 miles on flat land, you are already fast.

What are you doing wrong? expecting to average 30mph while just kicking it around the way.. Thats awfully fast, and if you are holding that for 2-3 miles at a time.. you are doing just fine..

Yeah but I was drafting him. So it was a little easier. LOL. I would like to do that in a head wind(probably never going to happen).

30mph is fast for even 2-3 miles. There is one group near me that does 50 miles, with a steady 25mph pace and bursts up to 31-33 mph for several miles at a time. They all ride 5 times a week, 50-70 miles per ride. I just stay out of the way when they come by

I've gone that fast for a little over 50 minutes in a 40km tt. 25000km training per year, ride a bunch of uci sanctioned stage races as preparation, catch your 6 minute man and get a minute and change put into you by a pro.

Blood transfusion, EPO, things of that nature. But seriously I'm slower than I should be for a 30 year old 180 lb (maybe) rider.

whatevs. i've only been passed once. dude on a carbon bike with some huge cluster of shiny sprockets on his rear wheel. i usually dominate all terrain at all times. i forget how fast i am.

naawww....my flats avg is anywhere from 20 - 30 on an old Cdale. i've got an 11t-28t freewheel that crushes descents at like 50mph, which is scary fun. seriously. 50mph. and i'm fat, too.

you're fast. just have fun.

You're using the wrong kind of chain lube.

Also take off the valve caps.
