Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin speed sensor

does anyone know what the little red light on the side of the Garmin speed sensor that reads the magnet on your rear wheel means when it comes on?? I put new batteries in and I still can't get a reading on my head unit for any speed.

According to the manual the red LED blinks each time the pedal magnet passes the sensor. The green LED blinks each time the spoke magnet passes the sensor arm. The speed will show when the "crank" icon appears on the main screen. I found the cadence (red LED) works only if the timer is started. Try moving the magnet around until the icon shows up.

Yeah, apparently the red light isn't just a light, it's a soft touch button. Press it, spin the wheel and it does blink green for about 60+ revolutions and this calibrates it. My garmin paired with it right off. Fixed!! Thanks!

Bikes: A really light one and a really heavy one.

If it's blinking when the magnet passes and you're still not getting a reading, go into the system and make sure you set it up to so it shows you having the cadence/speed sensor ON.

Not exactly. It has nothing to do with calibration. The button press and light flashes are there to allow you to ensure the magnets are positioned sufficiently close to trigger the sensors. The lights don't flash in normal use to conserve battery power. You don't have to press the button to pair it with your Edge. A magnet passing the cadence or wheel sensor wakes the unit up at which point it can be paired without ever pressing the button. It will go back to sleep after a period of inactivity to conserve battery power.

The sensor only broadcasts. It does not receive any signals from the Edge.

right you are. on the edge 810 I had to go under the bike specs to get it to pick up the cadence thingy. Just having it search for a cadence, or speed/cadence connection I couldn't get to work. But under the bike set up, there was a button to hit to search for a cadence/speed sensor and it finally found it. thanks!!
