Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Strava 'What The ****' Question

There's a circuit I occasionally ride. It's just 0.6 miles long, in a business park that is almost 100% deserted during the weekend and at nights, the road surface is excellent, and the corners are wide and safe. A crit is run around this circuit, and quite a few crit racers use it as for training precisely because it's safe and fast.

So I rode a few laps today, and it would not show me my (lowly) position on the leader list because...
"This segment has been marked as hazardous by someone who has ridden it on Strava. Leader lists are not shown"

WUT ?!?

Report it to the Strava help desk. Is there a time of day when that might not be safe?

yeah, it happens... just email strava support and explain your thoughts. I've done that a number of times and they've been pretty reasonable about unflagging things.

Probably it was flagged by mistake. I did that once on a popular KOM route, where someone had posted a 55mph+ time. Someone left their garmin on driving home or something and I was trying to flag a "ride" for that, but it wound up a "hazardous route" flag and there was no way for me to undo it. I e-mailed in and they fixed it the next day; the route and all the previous times were back up.

Yeah, I've seen a handful of segments in my area be flagged lately...sometimes I think people do it to be idiots...they lost their kom, so now no one can have it. I usually just report them. They're customer service is top notch.

Bikes: Lectric Xpedition.

If it requires blowing through a stop sign, it will and should be flagged.

There's a trail I ride frequently in my area. There are usually a few cyclists, but primarily there are people on foot (and a lot of elderly people some days). One section of the trail has a KOM score with speed of 36+ mph. I can't even begin to fathom riding 36mph on this section of the trail, there is a bridge that is wooden and fairly narrow, and I wouldn't want to imagine an accident with pedestrians that would occur at these speeds. The crazy part is that it is listed as a climb, with 10.9% grade ... the speed that people get on this climb really make me realize how low level of a rider I am (although I guess being on page 2 out of 9 isn't the worst) ... thanks Strava :/

Did you check out the performance tab and look at the data? Something's up with that ride as the rider goes from 5mph to ~40mph in a heartbeat. It's always worth being skeptical of outlier KOM's.

Yeah, it seems kind of odd that the pro that came in second was at 500+w and the guy holding the kom was only at 130w and instantly flew up the hill.

Save it for A&S. He already said it was in an office park.

Got my response from Strava:

Hello,

Thank you for sending us your feedback about this segment. This system is in place to keep the competition safe on Strava, and it relies on the feedback of our users. Because we are not in a position to evaluate the hazards present on a given segment, we have to take the comments associated with segments flagged as hazardous very seriously.
We understand that the current functionality of this feature is limiting, as after one person flags a segment as Hazardous, the entire leaderboard is removed for all users. This can be frustrating because what one user thinks is a hazardous segment might not be judged the same way by another user. We are working on ways to increase this functionality in the future, but for now we are unfortunately unable to remove the flag from this particular segment, as the comments do indicate a legitimate potential hazard:

"Segment contains multiple stop signs many riders are ignoring."

Thanks for your patience while we work on improving this experience.

Best,
*****

"Segment contains multiple stop signs many riders are ignoring." ?!?

So I've made another identical segment. Let's see how it works...

Bikes: Three road bikes. Two track bikes.

What's "Strava staulking"? Sounds dirty.

In the 33 it would be.
We have a lot around here that purposefully go after KOMs to take them from guys they don't like.

Why would anyone care about a downhill segment? HTFU and do some climbs.

Why do some (wussies perhaps) act like descending is not a skill.

I think you are looking for the mountain bike forum.

BTW, my comment was directed at downhill segments in general, not Looigi.
