Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheel upgrade question, help appreciated!

My road bike currently has a wheelset that weighs at least 2500g. The front wheel alone is 1267g (without a tire/tube, just the wheel), the rear must be more. I've been looking at Nashbar's 20% off deal today to pick up some Vuelta Corsa SLR's (https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...37_-1___202455) as a birthday gift to myself. I'm 6'2" and around 190lbs, I ride about 200-300 miles a month and am looking to get into racing next year. I can't shell out big bucks for really nice wheels but I feel like my current set are as heavy as pigs.

Would this be worth the $300, i.e. will I notice that much of a difference? Or should I just save the cash for a better overall bike in the future? THANKS!

People here often recommend those as a good budget option, and you should notice the difference over yours if they're as heavy as you say.

Assuming everything on the bike is in good functioning order, wheels are always the best upgrade, in my opinion. You should look up reviews on the wheelset, in question. For everyday riding, you want something durable. Smooth rolling & light are always a bonus. These always come at a cost & often, drawbacks. Often times a wheel builder will spin you up a set of wheels that best suit your needs at a price that Is far short of that of big bling items. My experience is that ultra lightweight wheelsets tend to break down sooner, as do less expensive wheelsets with cheaper components. Something in the middle range that's a little more stout(heavy) can often last you a lot longer.
