Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Unfortunately, there's no changing this man's way of thinking. If anything, he hates cyclists even more.

Bikes: Three road bikes. Two track bikes.

Looks like he was arrested and charged... so, there's that...

One of the men asks the Clark, "Why are you holding the bat?" to which Clark replies "To protect myself". Before anything could get resolved, Clark proceeds to get back into his vehicle and leaves the scene of the accident and in doing so, also runs over one of the $5,000 bikes in front of his car.

"The driver attacked with his vehicle a team ride. The riders were not taking up the road and the vehicle had plenty of room to move around them. The vehicle proceeded to go in front of them and slow down to their speed and slammed on the breaks thereby causing them to crash and stop. The driver proceeded to step out of the vehicle with a bat. what you see is the aftermath of the confrontation. Be kind to riders -- we are parents, fathers, mothers, spouses, sons, daughter, and many of us have children."

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office arrived and Clark was arrested for criminal mischief -- $1,500 to $20,000 and for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

His way of thinking matters not to me. The way he behaves is the real concern. That's what hopefully will be changed. Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon is a very serious crime. I hope he incurs the full wrath of the legal system. If so, there's probably a good chance his behavior will change.

The info doesn't say if the owner of the bike got reimbursed for it. I'd say that's more important to him than whatever penalty gets levied at the driver.

I posted stories about it in A&S: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...t-a-group-ride

I don't think you're crazy at all. If someone is threatening my life, I'd want every opportunity to defend myself.

I dunno. As it is, you have an old coot who most likely lose his license, pay some fines, get sued for bike replacement, and possibly serve time.

A gun would have converted this to a pathetic old coot lying dead on the road, and, if the press had nothing better to do, a national firestorm and backlash against concealed carry.

Think about it.

One more thing. I don't think the image of cyclists trying to kick his door in will garner jury sympathy at what should have been a slam-dunk civil suit for damages.

Don't agree. It could have ended badly if the old man with the bat would have attacked and the cyclist had nothing to protect himself with (gun, knife etc.). The cyclist could have had a gun and not shot him, but have it handy in case the guy with the bat came at him.

Agree with you on this. That was very ******y of those cyclists. It shows that they were actually scared of him and when he got back in his car they acted all macho kicked with their little clips.. lame. I would not follow suit based on this video. Gives a bad rep to cyclists.

That is, if the coot had chosen to attack. As it was, the cyclists behaved wisely right up to when they kicked his door.

Having tried to kick a door while the car was moving, I can appreciate that we don't always make wise decisions when we are angry.

The problem is...there is little chance that guy will get his bike replaced. Look at it this way, even if they could have sued him for $1 million and won, he doesn't have it (more than likely). Nothing from nothing is nothing. If it were me, I couldn't care less if the guy does jail time vs me getting a new $5000+ bike to replace the one I dropped big $$ on. In the end, the old man does time and the cyclist gets it in the ass financially. I'm sure that at the time, the was thinking "You wreck my bike? I ruin your truck."

Right, wrong...doesn't matter, I'd be tempted to do the same thing...

^^^Its not like the bastard didn't have assets he could liquidate. The truck, for example.

Of course, its value would drop with a kicked-in door

Now just imagine cycling alone at dawn when a similar nut approaches from behind!

Years later, we'd all be wondering just exactly what caused your untimely fate.

Insecure driver + giant metal cocoon + yuppies in spandex + zero driver context about cycling + Texas = the video you see here. Some people literally lose their minds where they're in a car and see a yuppie wearing spandex. They can't take it and react in unpredictable ways.

I'll make some guess about these drivers' mentality:
They believe cyclists are insane.
They believe that they are being inconvenienced by lawbreaking cyclists who have no "right" to be on the road.
They don't get why cyclists "have to ride in groups".
They don't get why cyclists don't constrain cycling to sidewalks and bike paths.
To them, cyclists are possibly gay weirdos who wear superhero costumes while riding around on toys and aren't man enough to do a "real sport".

Cyclists become inhuman in their minds. They're not real people and don't deserve to be treated with respect or even safety. If cyclists die, they had it coming.
