I agree about Sinyard possibly not knowing, but am not so sure that the legal department initiated/approved the action on its own. In my experience the legal department advises the general management how to proceed, but the decision rests with the general management, not legal. At my corporate employment, legal always maintained the posture of an advisory body only.

Did no one else see the post regarding the small clothing company now in the same boat? While Sinyard was having breakfast in Cochrane it was business as usual back home.
If this one gets traction this could become a very serious issue for Specialized.

............CEO Mike Sinyard stated in an interview today that the big dustup over
Specialized, Inc. threatening to sue a small Canadian businessman over his use
of the name "Roubaix" was caused by a schizophrenic episode exactly like the
one suffered by the deaf sign interpreter at Nelson Mandela's memorial services.

To be fair, read the stuff on the Epix FB page, and in particular Sinyard's motivations for pursuing these cases. The S tactics suck and I can imagine that Sinyard is already counting the losses stemming from how badly both cases have been handled.

what do you call a shipful of lawyers sinking to the bottom of the sea?....................... a good start
FYI, I like Specialized bikes, don't really care about the company evil or not, it's a company trying to stay near the top in a competitive environment.

It's really stupid how they try to cover it up by talking about counterfeits.
Has anyone seen a fake Roubaix frame so far? Nope!
Does this guy (Dan of Café Roubaix) produce bike frames with this name? Nope!
Does the product he makes (Handmade Wheels) interfere with any product on the Specialized lineup? Nope!
I think S was just being greedy. This cannot be justified by a simple error of a company lawyer. Anyone working in any cycling company MUST know that Roubaix name is sacred and thus cannot be owned by a single enterprise. Just imagine Pinarello doing the same thing with the "Paris" name. It would be equally idiotic.

While I like my Specialized Tarmac and accessories, this episode to "stay" competitive really leaves a sour note in my mind. The difference between upper tier race bikes is not huge and leaping from one brand to another is really dependent on a number of intangible factors like "I think this company is cool." This bungle would have me looking at alternate choices when I decide to buy my next carbon road bike. Focus, Willier, Pinarello etc. vs Spec.
Companies that pick on the little guy with their lawyers bugs the heck out of me.

$11m is a lot of loot that a company might not be getting.
But the ramifications for S is that if it is true that a rider crashed on a counterfeit frame and messed his shoulder because the headtube separated, the first thing he going to do is sue someone for medical costs and other losses. It won't take long for S to identify the counterfeit, but that might not stopped some litigious lawyers, and there are costs associated with filing a defence that eventually will be borne by the customer.
Sinyard does deserve credit for getting personally involved with the Canadian case. But he can't do that for all the counterfeiters. It's just that he has to have a policy on which fights to pick, and which ones to let go.
There's room for only one gif like that on this page.
