Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I want to circle the state of New York, excluding "Downstate" and Long Island. Should be a 1200 mile trip.

Second, you have excellent taste. Several of the rides you mentioned are already on my list, but I may have to borrow most of the rest.

I've never been to the Wind River Range, is there pavement there or are you going to take an MTB?
yah, been wanting to do the north cascades hwy for years but between family trips and weather, it has just never worked out.
a washington state/bc riding/hiking exclusively trip for 2 weeks is waay overdue.

i've never been to the wind rivers either but have been wanting to hike/bike them for 20+ years. it's a relatively impenetrable range with no paved through
roads. kinda like a mini-southern sierras so all the roadie rides would be in and outs as far as the road takes you or the larger hwys circumnavigating the range
(which is pretty good size). a mtb or cx bike might be a better choice depending on your exact destination(s)/desires. all the pics i've even seen of the wind rivers
are just stunning. if they weren't in the backyard of the tetons and yellowstone, i suspect they would be better known/more visited. how the hell this place isn't
a national park with the scenery and concentration of glaciers i'll never know but since it isn't, it gets a tenth of the visitation it should. someday.

Just a few suggestions for everyone else:

Tibet: Lhasa to Kathmandu with side trip to Everest north face. Take some diamox with you as propholyactic for elevation induced illness.

The Tribhuvan highway in Nepal. Leaving KTM is on a long switchback road that is heavily traveled with truck traffic, but the speed limit is only 40 kph, and traffic is rarely going that fast. On a bike, you're most likely keeping up until you reach the turnoff to Damian. The rest of the way to Damion has one long climb and one short one, then another 10km climb to Damion till you reach the tourist inn with an overlook over the valley. The next day is another 10 km uphill (about an hour), then starts down broken macadam toward Hetuada. It finally morphs into a nicely paved road for the rest of the 30 miles down hill.

Then you can spend a couple days at Chitwan park, a World Heritage site, spend a day riding to Butwal with a side day trip south to Lumbini (birthplace of Siddharta Gutami - the historical Bhudda). Then a short trip to Tansen, a day to Pohkera which is a pleasant tourist trap and the base for any trekking up towards the Annapurnas.

I did the route solo and it was probably the last thing I would remove from the bucket list of my past life.

Great Divide is my big one. I would love to ride from Canada to Mexico along the West Coast, or even just top of California to the bottom.

Not the best for a bucket list as it is fairly easy to accomplish, but Moab is another place I would like to spend a few days. As well as Mammoth Mountain CA, Bend OR, Sedona AZ. Oh! And Haleakalā, if I can ever afford to go to Hawaii.

I've done some of the rides on your original list. I've done my fair share of riding in the US and Europe. I've never seen a finer road than Hwy 20 through the cascades.

So I think the next ride on my bucket list is to a ride from Portland (spend a few days there first to check out the beer and bike shops) back to my home in Des Moines, IA. I haven't figured out the first part of the route but I know I want to do the Black Hills and the Sandhills of NE.

The Going to the Sun Road and Pike's Peak are a couple of day rides that I would like to do. Longer trips are the Great Divide, Denali to Achorage, the Fireweed 400, Iceland's Ring Road, coast-to-coast across the US, the Australian Outback, and the length of the Andes. The last two I would do as part of an organized tour.
I have done a few rides that people might consider bucket list items, like Death Valley, the Tetons and Yellowstone, and Trail Ridge road.

I know this is a necro post, but just in case anyone's considering it...

Lived in Iowa my entire life and done the full thing 5 times. Way overrated.

At the end of the day it's still 22,000 people going 9 mph on hybrids with helmet mirrors, fanny packs, SPD sandals and no group riding experience whatsoever. If you want to eat pork sandwiches and see 7 cover bands in one week it's right up your alley though.

I like that idea. I know there are all kinds of interesting rides in and around NYC, and I'm sure the same is true for LA, too. It would be interesting to see what it's like to be a regular cyclist in a different city. Getting international, I'd add London, and some big Mediterranean city, like Nice, Barcelona or Naples to the list. Or how about Budapest, or Bucharest? Of course I'd want to be with local cyclists the whole time, too.

When I was a motorcyclist, I could imagine all kinds of epic rides, and really wanted to do a tour of Italy - especially the less-popular central and southern areas, and the Adriatic side, but I haven't felt the same keen urge to travel on a bicycle yet.

A couple of rides that are kinda bucket-list and that I'm going to do are the local cyclosportives next year - Gran Fondo New York in May, which I've already signed up for, and the New Jersey one, which is later. I'm really psyched about them.

Speaking of which, and getting back to cycling with locals in other towns, how about the London Surrey 100 for a Bucket List item?

Honestly, I'm totally satisfied riding locally. I do want to try a race this year.

If there was a Tour of Texas, that would be on my list. Texas is larger, but the same order of magnitude as France (265k to 211k square miles), and while there's nothing like the Alps or Pyrenees, there are some decent hills and canyons. I haven't lived there in 17 years, but it's my home state, so it would be as much a sentimental ride as anything.
