Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I shot for a 2.5 hr ride. I used my spare tube last night to fix a flat and thought I would stop by the shop to pick a couple up on the way. The shop was open, and I got my tubes, and promptly flatted again about 5 min later. CO2 didn't quite catch so I pulled back in for his pump and noticed a huge slice in my GP4000 . I almost called for the team car (wife) at that point, but decided to stick it out and ride home. Once back to my neighborhood, I looped around the development for another 12mi and got in about 33 miles, or what I will refer to as 2hrs of base training.

My last ride, after 13.5k Km total for 2013, was a steady HR Z1/Z2 roll for 42Km around sunny Inverloch in Victoria, whilst my kids were at the local Nippers session. Nippers, for those not in the know, is the annual summer beach safety awareness training that thousands of young'uns participate in all around Australia and is aligned with surf lifesaving clubs.

Cheers and have a great 2014 all.

Utterly dull 30 mile out and back on the local bike path. 30 degrees, 20 mph winds on the way out, sweet tailwind on the way home.

My last ride should have been bliss. Unfortunately things went terribly wrong. A 99km ride of mountains and hills, a magic 5 deg c, and 4 of us. At the 50 km mark we hit mud, which stuck to our tyres like sh*t to a blanket. Clogged our brakes etc, so we had to clear it out with sticks. And then we were on our way again.

Until the 62 km mark when one of the guys had a head on with a mini truck. The truck veered to the wrong side of the road. Into the windscreen and wrecked his one day old bike. Anyway he was carted off in a meat wagon to hospital and we had to organise for the remains of his bike to be taken to the local fire station for later pick up. BTW he's as well as could be expected. No major damage.

Not as entertaining as a jaunt in the Japanese mtns, but a 22.5 mile loop along the intercoastal and Atlantic Ocean on NYE morning, don't remember the temps but I think it was a chilly 50° F here on the east central coast of Fla.

I looked at my Strava feed and saw I was at 4,292 miles... I couldn't take it... I had to go put in some junk miles just to break the 4,300 mile mark. My goal was 4,000 this year so I'm pretty happy!

Last outdoors ride was with a buddy on 12/28. Distance was 18.27 miles. The pace was leisurely as my friend hadn't done any riding or trainer time since early November.

Last ride for me was Christmas eve. A short but sweet 24 kms in the sunshine (pretty rare around these parts in the winter).

My last was a regular 25 mile loop from my house through the rural roads of the adjoining county. A pleasant low 60s, it was a delightful ride and although I've done this route many times it never really gets dull.

about 2 weeks ago we had a warm streak of weather. I went on my first long night ride on my new mountain bike and loved it! Had the trails all to myself. Will have to do this more often...

2 hour ride. Spent the last 30 minutes washing off the ridiculous amount of salt I collected.

I'm a moron riding without rims. I'll be buying a pair tomorrow, one of those black plastic ones thin enough for road bikes, $40 I was quoted. I really don't want to put ugly rims on 'em, but it beats washing off salt off my helmet, lulz.

It was awesome. It was the longest ride I've done in a while, with the most climbing (43 mils with about 4600 ft of climbing). I felt really strong and actually did really well. I had done Mt Diablo a few days ago so combining that and this ride were 2 phenomenal rides. Rode it with a great group and we did a lot of exploring.

How do you ride without rims?

Rims? Perhaps fenders or mudguards?

My last ride of '13 was on the mtb.

Wimp. You call that a climb???

Just kidding. See my post #43 in this thread. I think I'm KOM so far for this thread, which would be a first. I'll have to check my Garmin though for the exact height. I know I passed the 5500' mark and did a bunch more switchbacks before my legs just gave out. My longest previous climb was only 1500'.
