Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Velominati and @coasting are completely wrong when it comes to stem length, but I will agree with him to an extent about the softer tires. This city is a much nicer place when my wider tires are at 35 PSI front and 40 PSI rear. (LoP recommended I go down to 30 and 35 so I'm trying that tomorrow. You can do that, I guess, when you're 118 pounds and running 2 1/4" tires.) It's also a nicer place when you're wearing tights and a dress because a) no thick seams and b) a girl on a bike in a dress is still enough of a novelty in Vancouver that people smile and act friendly and polite. Today was the first day it was warm enough to try it so there's no repeatability but if it works for me again then I recommend it as a more general practice. I mean, if you're going to shave your legs anyway, you could at least rock a kilt.

....I wore tights and a dance belt when playing the Count Orsino in Twelfth Night. Sadly, those days are behind me.

...I have a decent singing voice, but it's not up to Gilbert and Sullivan, I fear.

I was relatively young (early 20's), so I like to think I cut a dashing figure in those tights.

Lear would be the role of a lifetime:

Poor naked wretches, wheresoe'er you are,
That bide the pelting of this pitiless storm,
How shall your houseless heads and unfed sides,
Your loop'd and window'd raggedness, defend you
From seasons such as these? O! I have ta'en
Too little care of this! Take physic, pomp;
Expose thyself to feel what wretches feel,
That thou mayst shake the superflux to them,
And show the heavens more just.
...but the fool has some great lines.

hey LAJ

I think your bike is super cool, but I have to deduct points for lack of gaudy colours. throw some splashes of red or white or green onto it.

As to transporting high-wheelers/pennyfarthings, we saw several examples after the 20-mile ride the competitors did on Sunday.

Some had them mounted as full bikes (ie, with big wheel attached) on bike racks that have the full-width channel across the vehicle. One had three PFs on the back like this... each of a different size starting with the kid's one shown in my previous photographs.

But usually, it was a van. Much easier to put the front wheel slanted across the vehicle, with the frame underneath. I do recall seeing a largish hatchback with a wheel and frame in the back, but I am not sure what size the wheel would have been.

I do know this -- pennyfarthing riders stand out like the proverbial dog's balls at the top of hills. They are around eight foot tall.

I also was really surprised how agile the bikes were. There was a slalom event with cones about 15 foot apart. The woman who discussed PFs with Machka as we rode along was able to do a U-turn without issue on a standard two-lane road. Impressive.

The downside is that they are fixed gear, and pushing into the 15-20 mph headwind wouldn't have been that much fun on the way back.
