Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You have made sure the rims have the same number of holes as the hubs, haven't you? That's a really, really good starting point in wheel building.

How less durable. I read this all the time, yet there are wheels around this place that have been going for 10 years... with straight-gauge spokes.

Good lord you've all been busy. Work is crazy so it'll be at least another week that I'm rare around here. What'd I miss?

Oh, and I just killed a full roll of wrapping paper wrapping Atomic Girl's birthday present. Skills.

Well, they cost less, so obviously they're inferior in every way. Did that memo not get to you? I told them we were putting cover sheets on all the #41ier memos now.

I have broken free of Clydesdale status this past week. At last. We joined a really excellent gym recently, and the swimming and aerobic workouts seem to be doing justice to the cost.

I might have to start shopping for a new wardrobe soon, however.

About to set off for our first 100km ride in several years. It's a recce for a nouveau type of event in a couple of weeks, just to see if we can make the required minimum average time. It's a pretty part of the world and Machka should be stopping often for pictures.

it's not really the temperature, it's just that usually when it's really cold, the air is much drier. need some humidity for it to snow.

it's currently snowing. i spent another two hours chipping ice off the sidewalks today. i'm pretty much trapped here since my car is in the garage and there's no way in hell it's going to make it out of the alley. i'm contemplating walking 16 blocks to the paint store because the bright green living room is really starting to annoy me, and i didn't find another color in the paint collection in the basement that i cared for and i want to get it painted since i'm having a sofa and mattress delivered on monday.

i'm so excited. i've been sleeping on camping mats for the last week and a half, and my only other furniture has been my sewing table and a folding chair. a good bed is not overrated.

Ugh - my condolences. I did that yesterday - uncovered about 150' of sidewalk that had 1-3" of ice on it. Forearms/wrists were sore as hell last night - I couldn't hold a full pitcher of water upright without using two hands.

yikes. well, it hasn't bothered my arms but my back is a mess. also feel it in the shoulder with the broken collarbone. neighbor saw me using a pitchfork i found in the garage and let me borrow his ice chipper. big heavy thing, it was almost easier to use the pitchfork. i've been coating everything with salt the past week in hopes of loosening things up a little. i'm not sure it actually did anything, but now the whole front is clear, and now there's just two sections in the back that were still too solid/i was too tired to get through. the ruts in the alley are a different story.

You will rebuild from this. A long time ago, I was in this sort of situation twice. You meet the challenge, get your crap together, and start over. However, in a way, forced downsizing makes you realise you can survive without a house full of furniture and mod-cons.

Oh, and yes, every step forward is one full of excitement.

A long handled flat spade shovel works pretty well once you can get under the ice - some low-angle thrusting will make it satisfyingly large chunks jump out of the way.

whenever i realize that i've been strangely calm the past few weeks, when in the past i'd be a mess, i figure it's two things... age, and the relief of not being yelled at every day. my biggest concern now is just making enough money to hang on to this place.

i couldn't find a metal shovel, so i did some low-angle thrusting with the pitchfork.

I'm going to try out the Charge Spoon saddle that LoP's been using. Pretty sure I want a Ladle when I get the cash for one. Definitely not the white and red one but either the black or brown would look good on the bike.

Hoping the weather is moderately dry tomorrow since I plan to ride to Norwegian pancake breakfast- then to Bike Clark County for some wrenching- and I kind of wanted to wear a skirt which is a miserable proposition if it's soaked with rain.

...let me know if you ever find an outfit for biking that is not rendered a miserable proposition when soaked by rain. Chafing is just no fun at all.

Goshawks are kinda badass. For a bird that size they can catch birds in flight, and medium size ones too. They will jack up a crow, a bird too big for most other raptors to bother with.
