Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I went to see the Stage 2 time trial in Folsom. Good thing we missed the heat wave 2 days later.

Cool pics! Cav looks obese in comparison to Wiggo. I still think most cyclist have a nasty beer belly. They don't look that skinny.

His name here is HunkerDown. I believe that his real name is Matt.

what kinds of rides does Serious Cycling do? What time do they meet and where? During Cruisin the Conejo I saw a number of riders wearing the SC jerseys.

Are you going to do the Ride of Silence?

Matt? Guy who owns horses? If that's him, I ride with him all the time. We did a CVC ride out to the coast two weeks ago.

Serious shop rides are varied. There is a racing/fast group (so not me) and then our middle distance group (30-50 miles but we actually stop and re-group). There is a climbing group and beginners. All rides leave the shop at 8 on Saturdays. We'll get about fifty people out there a lot of weekends. Come on down.....I ride a new blue Domane.

Not sure on the Ride of Silence. I did it a couple of years ago and considering it again.

Interesting. You're the first person who has voiced this opinion that I've heard, but I've been thinking the same thing this race season so far. I've seen some pictures of riders that look like they are packing on some stomach pounds, but are super light. I think it has to do with positioning. I'm a fairly skinny runner, but when I sit down and especially when I lean over my stomach folds. I imagine it is the same deal with their stomachs.

It is also breathing technique. If you google cyclist breathing or something like that, you'll see that most pros make it a point to breathe through the stomach and not the chest.

Aren't they basically the same weight (~70kg +/-) but there's a 6" difference in height? Only in cycling could 6'3" and <160lbs. be considered a normal weight

Where is the best place to watch a bike race like this from, finish line? photo ops with the pros or do you need VIP for that?

Seems that events like road races and golf matches are best viewed via the TV. Otherwise you see just a snippet of the event! FWIW

That is what makes this last stage a good one for us. The teams are doing multiple circuits of a local climb so rather than just going through in a second or two, we get a little more viewing time. It takes about forty minutes for them to swing around again. When the riders start going off the back, they come by us pretty slowly, or at least that was the case in 2010 when they did this same route.

Just before the racers get to us, a official car comes by with a loudspeaker telling the crowd what the latest situation is.

ugh...great race, but the video feed is atrocious. nbc needs to reach out to the folks that televise the Giro for some advice next year. very difficult to watch.

This race is best seen in person as the Live video footage is the worst I have ever seen (choppy broken video), Beyond Bad!

I used to work for the company does the microwave cameras for the LA Marathon, Sunday/Monday/Thursday Night Football, etc. etc. etc. The producers of the ToC insist on using the same crappy RF company that does the TdF. To be fair, microwave does NOT like solid tree canopies. I can't fault that. HOWEVER, when the helicopters can't even keep a good signal, that's a JOKE. Worst coverage I've ever seen of any event. They need to employ the new cellular technology that splits the HD video up over multiple cell channels, then also over multiple carriers. It adds latency (delay), however, I suspect once down into the flatlands, it would be far better than the microwave under the trees. Hopefully they make a change in providers for next year. I won't watch it like that again!

Whoa! They made them go up the steep way! The last race they went up the down entrance to the summit, but that's a 15+% grade for the last 100m they're climbing. Thanks for posting that.

Great race. It was a long hot day, but definitely worth it. Even got a picture with Sagan after he was done getting blood taken in the anti-doping truck.

That was hilarious. I love the announcers "He won the race, 5 miles to soon" haha.

I went to Stage 1 in Sacramento. I just now got all my pictures and videos together. You can check it all out here if you're bored.

Not sure why, but I like this picture of Greg Van Avermaet.
