Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cleaning synthetic jerseys

I have a few synthetic jerseys --- rayon or polyester or something. I made the mistake of buying a white Canari jersey with black accents and my sunscreen has reacted with my skin and jersey to make a coffee brown stain around the edges.

How do you guys get your light colored jerseys clean?

Are you sure it is not Merino wool? You can't use chlorine bleach on synthetics or wool. Best bet if simple machine washing with good detergent doesn't work is a gentle oxygen bleach like Oxy-Clean.

+1 on Oxiclean or borax. Very effective at removing odors too. NEVER chlorine bleach. Also, never fabric softener as it ruins wicking ability.

I wash all my jerseys in cold water with regular detergent, hang them to dry. No problems in 7-8 months of frequent washings.

I use Woolite for Darks.
My jersey is white with colors.
It's a gentle detergent that works perfectly.
Hang to dry, of course.

Hand wash with a fragrance-free and fabric softener-free detergent after every ride. You can do a far better job by hand than the washing machine, it's easier on the garment (if you do it right), and you minimize the time stains have to "set". Plus it uses less water and no electricity.

For the sunscreen on the neckline stain I use Fels Naptha. Works great.

+1 As mentioned, Oxiclean or Borax work on sunscreen stained clothing when normal machine washing doesn't do it. Sometimes a pre-soak will help on stubborn stains on white jerseys.

I just wash in my bathtub before I shower- add a few drops of body wash to the shirt and shorts, scrub together for 30 seconds, then hang to dry in my apartment. Shorts then go in the washer every few wears; but I don't really put the jerseys in the laundry. Capilene shirts, sure, but not jerseys. They seem like the colors would bleed or something. Maybe if I had my own washer/drier I would do it, but I wash all my stuff together at a laundromat.

A big plus one for oxiclean, which I learned about on these forums. It works.

Spray Shout on the stained spots and scrub them lightly with a sponge while wet with Shout. Wash in machine with Atsko Sport Wash.

My wife uses a bar of Fels on all the tough local stains - wet the material, rub the bar into the stain, rub the material togehter then wash it out. Not perfect but best I've seen. One bar will last you a very very long time.

By never using sunscreen when I wear them. Otherwise that's a losing battle.

Definitely not Merino. I'll look into Oxy-clean.

I'd rather lose a battle with a shirt than lose the battle with the sun. Shirts are replaceable. Repeated sunburn can lead to some types of skin cancer.

I've cleaned up off-topic talk. If you would like to have a discussion about the global warming effects of getting a stain out of a jersey, by all means, please feel free to start a thread on it.....in P&R. Thanks.

Yeah, wasn't suggesting doing without sunscreen when it's warranted. I simply don't wear any of my white jerseys in the summer time; they are relegated to winter use, when I can wear them with arm warmers or a long sleeve baselayer so that I don't need sunscreen. (Or for night rides.)

I haven't noticed any issue with sunscreen and white jerseys. What sunscreen do you use? I have some fairly benign stuff (badger brand or something) that doesn't seem to do anything to my jerseys... yet.

Do you have snow where you live? White jerseys can help hide you in the winter against snow covered mountainsides and help keep you cooler (to a point) in the summer. I consider white a summer color.
