Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheelset recommendations below $300 (new or used)

I'm relatively new to road bikes, and am looking for a wheelset that's shimano compatible and below $300. I'm OK with new or used, but I want them to come with a hub that's compatible with Shimano cassettes (6800 if it matters). Any recommendations?

If it helps, I'm not willing to hugely sacrifice durability for weight, and likewise with completely disregarding weight for durability. Something quality that'll be fun to ride on without having to true them constantly is what I'm going for. I'll primarily use them for exercise, fun, and maybe a little racing.

I'd think that finding 11-speed used wheels is potentially likely to be somewhat difficult, depending on where you are, especially for $300 or less.

For $400, you could get these:

30mm Rouleur Clincher - Boyd Cycling

I'm not fan of proprietary wheels - you're paying for bling.

Mavic wheels are 11 speed compatible since 2003, so they might be a good choice. I have a 2004 cosmos wheelset for winter riding and they are still great, true with 24/28 spoke setup. Also not overly heavy.

+1 on Mavic's being 11 speed compatible. I have a set of silver SL's available via the classifieds here...

Perfect. Thanks.

I'll have to see if the Vuelta Corsa Lights are 11 speed compatible.

The Vuelta Corsa Pro is also 11-speed compatible. The spacer confused the heck out of me at first.
