My biggest beef with a jersey (normally) is when the pockets have cruddy elastic openings where stuff can easily slid right out. That being said, I buy the lower end/sale stuff that usually has cruddy elastic so I run into this a lot

For those of you who add velcro/zippers to the jersey pockets what kind did you use or is it just the generic stuff?

Of course zippers will be more secure than velcro but I am not opposed to a fat layer of velcro to insure everything stays put.

I also see how velcro will eat away at the jersey over time (if not done properly) but as long as the soft side is bigger than the teeth side, I don't think that will be a problem.

Thoughts, comments, questions, suggestions?

Velcro would probably destroy the jersey in a washing machine.
I think it could end up being an epic struggle to get the pocket open when you are tired.
I haven't lost anything from my back pockets, yet.

Yeah, I mostly buy value-priced jerseys and have never had a problem keeping stuff in the pockets.

You need to look for jerseys with taller deeper pockets, or carry less stuff.

what do you carry in the pockets ?

I have a small saddle bag worth of stuff: multitool, patch kit, tube, levers and a 2 or 3 strips of leather. My phone stays in my jersey pocket but the only thing keeping it from sliding around would be the grippy rubber case, but even that will work its way into position for launch.

My bag is pretty much stuffed, so for longer rides i put bars/keys/money/ etc in my pockets, but instead of focusing on the ride my mind is always "something just hopped up in my pocket" or something along those lines.

there are high quality name brand jerseys on EBay for a fraction of retail. Lots of them are new with tags. The cool thing about cycling gear is that people buy tons of new stuff thinking they'll get into cycling, find out it isn't their cup of tea, and end up selling their unused gear. I've saved several hundred dollars buying jerseys that way while still wearing the nice brands like PI, Primal, Sugoi, Garneau etc.

You could probably get some velcro, or even a zipper, on there- zig zag stitch for stretch-

but most folks cover the miles w/o stuff falling out. I have some cheapo jerseys, but no problems except contempt from the Rapha-wearers.

Maybe un-slam the stem?? Bigger saddle bag?

I have seen them, but haven't looked in a while. I suspect toward fall things will start popping up. I am buying up all my fall/winter gear this summer

Thinking about it at the gym tonight....I am going to pick up some velcro and to try it with one my my jerseys that is slightly too big for me and give it to a friend who sews. Whats the worst that's gunna happen? I ruin a jersey I don't wear anyways

Why not a button? It would be easier to sew on and I think it would do the trick. Lighter than a zipper and won't tear stuff up like velcro.

You might also consider a bento bag.

Find jerseys with better pockets. Second the ebay suggestion. Last October I bought a NWT Northwave jersey for a Halloween ride just because it was a skeleton front & back. Under $20. Ended up being a great jersey with deep tight pockets that can still hold food, phone, camera plus knee and arm warmers once the day warmed up.
