Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Road Bike.

I am 6 feet 1 inch 176 pounds and looking for a new road bike. I have saved 1200 dollars from cutting lawns and shoveling snow. I have looked at the trek 1 series and crossrip and the giant defy series and anyroad I think. I also been considering bikesdirect.com. My problem is I like the ride of my dads old mercier 12 speed better then anything I've ridden that's more modern. The ride is much smoother and mapmyride says I'm faster. This has made be almost not want to upgrade but this goes against one of my main values,"Newer is always better".

What have you ridden that's new and what's different a bout your mercier?

It's entirely possible to update the old mercier frame with a modern groupset and carry on that way.

I have ridden a giant defy and trek 1.3. They seem to have a much less smooth ride than the mercier. They also seem to be more tiring to ride. The mercier seems to absorb vibration better.

Look for an endurance frame bike, such as a Cannondale Synapse 6 Tiagra.
