Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I conquered Suck Creek Mountain!

Yea! My first big mountain. Elevation gain of 1407 feet in 5.4 miles (from the Sequatchie Valley side). To the monument and back home. Total ride of 22.5 miles. Total elevation of 1949 feet. Took 1:15 to go up and about 8 minutes to go back down

I am using a mountain bike with hybrid road tires. Not easy. Phew! I am pooped!

Congrats. Yah, climbing is hard, but go do it again next week. It'll be ever-so-slightly easier!

I thought maybe "suck creek" was an affectionate nick-name. Nope, that's the real name, all right.

Chattanooga, TN: Suck Creek Mountain Road | Other in Tennessee

I'd have to go ride it just because of the name!!!!

I went up from the other side from East Valley road. A little tougher. Same altitude gain with .5 miles less road and some crazy switchbacks. Fun on the way down

Named for a feature in the Tennessee River before the river dam system. Used to be a really treacherous area with a big whirlpool where many boats wrecked. Appropriately named The Suck.

If coming from Chattanooga side the monument is on the right hand side of the road immediately before cresting the mountain. If you know where the garage building recently burned down then it is just before that. There are picnic tables and all, but it needs mowed to really use the tables. It's all overgrown.

I've done the 3-State3-Moutain ride a few times and didn't notice it. Not the safest of roads for a mass event.

Route for 3-S-3-M doesn't climb Signal Mountain anymore. Raccoon, Sand, and Lookout now. And if you haven't ridden it since they added Burkhalter Gap you've missed the best part.

I didn't know the 3-S-3-M route to begin with. Suck Creek and Signal Mountain aren't the same mounains. They are on the same mountain ridge line, though. I guess this expalins why you weren't seeing the monument.

Anyhow my riding buddies think they should take me up Hensen's Gap next (this week)... There will be a 1000 ft gain in 2.2 miles area. Total from our homes of 30 miles. Hope I make it! I rode Brockdell Mountain and almost keeled over
Brockdell from the church.
