Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin Forerunner won't go the distance.

I have a Garmin Forerunner that I just love, FOR RUNNING. Found out today, while riding, it only last about 4 1/2 hours straight. Only good thing is before it quits, it saves your stats, that can be retrieved online. Do any of the other Garmin devices have longer battery life, and will handle a century ride, or more? I have an extended battery on my iPhone, and it will run continuously with GPS and screen on, for about 10 hours. So I still have the complete ride saved. I know, obsessive.

Yes, any of the 500 or 800 series last longer than 5 hrs. I've gone at least 8 hrs with an edge 800. Not sure what the max time is.

Check out the Garmin 510. Some of the ones with larger screens have shorter battery lives. My longest ride was probably 8 hours and I still had a decent % of battery left.

I ran my 510 a couple weeks ago to 14 hours on a 200+ miler (yes, I had hills in there.... And yes, I am slow!). When I plugged in to upload, it was at 19%.

i had Bluetooth off and rarely touch it while riding (which turns the backlight on).

I have the 310xt, which does run/bike/swim, and I'm getting a lot more life out of it than 4 hours. If the other day was typical, from a full charge, 6 hours will bring it down to a little under 50% (backlight was not used).

I will look into the 310xt. I like the watch over the larger display models. Thanks.

My Forerunner 305 will go probably 8 hours maybe even 10. If yours is a 305 you may have battery issues. I think I remember the 405 had a much shorter battery life compared to the 305.

Another +1 for the Forerunner 310XT here. I use it for running and cycling. Also bought the quick release kit so I can easily mount it on both bikes. It supports the ANT+ speed/cadence sensors and you can configure multiple bike profiles in the device. Battery has never run out in the three years I've used it, and I've made many 10H+ road trips. Syncs to Garmin Connect using an ANT+ dongle - no wires needed. Awesome device.

i used my forerunner 110 w/HR for a century (104 miles) about a month ago. my power isn't real high, so the entire trip took about 7 1/2 hours. i think i had about 25% battery left when i was done. i was a little concerned about how it would handle more than a 3 digit lap count. it just started over on the display, but tracked it properly when i uploaded the ride.

how much use have you gotten out of the watch? maybe the battery is losing some of it's staying power. not uncommon over time.
