Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

IMHO cyclecomputers are more "solid"...they just work.....so I would probably never rely on an Iphone as my ONLY device, but I have it with me anyway and running cyclemeter with the screen off really does not use much power, I did a 4 hour ride and it used something like 10% of the battery ??

Most dedicated devices provide superior functionality, period. Value, though, is subjective.

I do totally agree, that is why I will probably never be without a dedicated device :-). But maybe I can do fine with a SIMPLE fairly inexpensive dedicated advice, and gather and store other data with smart phone aps.

I need to dig into the dedicated devices because I will be buying one in the next 6 mos or so......need to see what the features are.
