Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale 3.0

Hey guys, I recently moved to the city and am looking for a bike just to cruise around on and maybe ride to the store here and there. I have been looking mostly on craigslist and haven't been able to find as many bikes as I thought I would have.

Cannondale 3.0 Aluminum

I stumbled across this last night and it kind of sparked my interest. I do not know much about it but I do know it is 58cm witch may be a bit big for me (I'm 5'-11"). It does look like it needs some work but I was looking to spend a maximum of about $300 all together on a bike. Would this be a decent bike for me and is it reasonably priced? If so, would the cost a lot to fix/tune it up?

If you guys could give me any insight at all it would be absolutely great!

Thanks!

That's not a 58cm frame. Maybe a 52cm. $100 is a great price though. Buy it and drive it out to Philly where you can sell it for $300!

Among vintage collectors the Cannondale Criteriums command a premium. Nice bikes and very responsive.

I emailed the owner about the bike is regards to the size. Me being 5'-11" with about a 32" inseam length. Would a 52cm-53cm bike be to small for me? I'm not going to be using this for cycling or anything just merely as a commuter. Would the size really affect me if I'm really only using it for that purpose? Thanks for all the input so far!!

I believe you would find it too small. That's a pretty tight geometry frame. Within limits you can ride a too-small frame by raising the seat and buying a longer stem, but at some point you start hitting bike parts with body parts. I agree on the 52cm estimate -- if that bike was 58cm it would be in my garage right now.

Too small. You could ride it but probably wont be happy with it in the long term. Maybe if it were 56-58cm.....

3.0 is a great old bike! I've got one in 56cm and I'm 5'10". That one would be way too small for you. You should be able to find plenty of nice used bikes in your price range if you keep looking and are patient. Good luck!

<------ That's it in the pic.

Yup. My 5'7" friend rides basically the same bike which I set up for him. My 6'1" friend rides another Cannondale Criterium that I also got for him that is a 60cm frame. I had a 58cm at one point but sold it on Craigslist to a guy who was a little under 6 foot IIRC.

I have an '88 criterium series 54cm that fits my 5'9 frame perfectly. When the criteriums fit you just cant find a more lively ride. Cant keep my butt off it.
