Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I should be riding the road bicycle daily by this weekend, I'll start with an attempt at a flat 8-9 miles and take it from there. Wednesday is 6 weeks post op, so TKR (total knee replacement) to road bicycle in 6.5 weeks is really substantially better than I had hoped for. I did ride the bicycle yesterday in the 39 x 25 around my neighborhood yesterday for 15-20 mins, no problems. I had elevated the seat 1-2 cm to make the flex less extreme at the peak of the crank rotation, but it really felt ok. I'm on the bike on the trainer 10-25 mins daily until then.

Hot damn! The raw ones are nasty. There are two levels of hot, and the bags are marked hot and hottest. Wash your hands......

Thank you @RUOkie. I appreciate the concern.

My first weekend out, I think my body yelled "not only no, but hell no" the next few days. I have taken it easier from then on, and have progressed up gradually. Yesterday was 85 miles with a good amount of power, a little elevation, and a decent average speed. (I know. #takeittothe41 ) I felt good on my commute today, so I think it may be a go. Quad pain goes away on the bike, and I actually feel good while on it. It's the walk to the truck from the bike that gets me! There are plenty of bail outs, should I choose to cut it short.

"No" means "no" even/especially if you're talking to yourself.

Today is my Saturday. I'm doing laundry, drinking day- at least- old coffee reheated on the stove, and listening to a Slacker Radio station I started with this song.

...interestingly, when I am talking to myself, no almost always means, "What the hell, man ? You know you want to do it. Go on or you're a *****."

I've been known to talk myself into things that I said no to.

It's been informally established that whoever does the dishes gets to choose the music the household listens to. I did the dishes today so we've been listening to stuff like this

and there hasn't been so much as a whisper of Lana Del Rey.

Big day. Woke up late. Short passage over to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. We took a big excursion, walked 2 blocks to the West Marine. Got some ice cream. Now mellowing out with a glass of wine. Dinner at the San Juan Island Yacht Club tonight. Very very mellow day.

And a great tree in town:

I am an advocate of exercising with some reality during healing of any sort because the increased heart rate gets the blood flowing to places at a greater rate, which means a faster exchange of the stuff that helps the process and gets rid of the waste faster. But there are limits. A 200 rando might be a tad ambitious...

Having said that, your body is doing the talking and if you listen carefully, you'll know when to stop.
