Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Street Racing

well, today i was practicing HARD-stops without skiding on a low-trafic area, slight down hill. as i was zooming along fairly quick i see a group of kids about my age(15) on cheap BMXs. My stupid fast & furious instenct kicked in, I made a quick u-turn with my rear-brake skid, quickly rode towards where they where, u-turn skid agin. Then i look over at them drop down a gear, NAIL-IT, and they freak(i dont know why) when i hit about 25mph on the side walk while they are on the street, and when i hit almost the end of the sidewalk i SLAM my rear brake on, locking the rear wheel creating the loudist skiding noise and i like back only to see them about 60feet behind me. then after i slowed down they cought up they try to skid, but the diden't and then i laughed, u-turn skid and went to walmart to buy some new brake pads i'll put on tommorow.

I cooked my rear brakes BIG time today, where down more then half the pad.

I know its a stupid story, but i was having fun.

LOL......

You got know how to tell stories better. You part where you NAIL-IT you forgot to mention how the front wheel came off the ground because of the torque/power of your spin.

Bikes: Surly Cross-Check, '85 Giant road bike (unrecogizable fixed-gear conversion

I always thought the sport of cycling was lacking in variety as far as events. There are four different types of triathlons, at least 10 different events in swimming etc.

But in bike racing you have criteriums and time trials and that's about it.

How about bike drag racing?
Slalom events?
Any other ideas?

I like the part where he describes smoking the rear tire under braking, but for some reason the pads are melted halfway down (as if the wheel didn't lock up). Nice.

Highspeedcyclist, I like your style.

I see you as the "Big Thing" in cycling. Keep up the hard pedaling.

perhaps.

But I'm confused. In his other thread, he says he's been riding a long time, but here he says he's 15?

It's like when I was at the convenience store the other day and got to chatting with the young (18yo?) clerk. He says, "yada yada, back in the day..."

I replied, "What day? Yesterday?"

I once did a mini-wheelie at the start of a TT. Does that count for anything?

Why were you going 25 on the sidewalk, on a skinny tired road bike? I am going to have to throw the BS flag. I have also yet to hear a skidding bike tire make a squealing noise. Were you, perhaps, on your minibike?

Wow I feel like I already read this thread..... Oh wait.... I did.... In the Racing forum.

A couple things people were saying that I remember that need to be cleared up:

1. He was not on a road bike.
2. Street racing is probably illegal on a bike, but don't worry about that. If anything you would get like reckless bicycle operation or something, probably nothing.
3. I've heard bicycle tires squeal. Not road tires, but certain ATB tires.
4. You need to buy better pads and they will last a lot longer than 2 weeks. I have had the same pads for months and I regularly descend mountains for long periods of time where I am going close to 50 and have to brake hard for turns, etc.
5. MrC, there are more events in cycling that Crits and TTs. There are also Road Races, Circuit races, hill climbs, TTTs, all of the track events, downhill MTBing, Cross Country Mtb, Short Track MTb. I could go on and on.
6. BMX bikes are not a fixed gear.

Messengers have all kinds of interesting contests. If you have the bandwidth, visit Lucas Brunelle's website and watch "drag race NYC."
